  1. I agree with Moonlit about the set design, and I agree with these comments

The ideas are good, but I think it looks... I don't know, unfinished, or incomplete. The look, in my opinion, doesn't fit the lighting either. It's vaguely futuristic, but it still looks like a half-finished "I'm a geek and this is my house, except I'm not very good at design, so my scifi inspired decoration doesn't look so hot" kinda deal.

It reminds me of "attack of the shows" set, in a sense.

Maybe this is just me, but I would love to see tons of security, programming, diy, etc. related books in the background. I understand its the house you guys live in, and you don't wanna clutter it with too much crap.

  2. is this a joke or something? srsly, get over yourself and your poster girlfriend. you explaining things is fine, but her sitting there for 20 mins doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING is just an excuse for you to show off ur little gf or w/e

why were you so bothered that snubs was in the background, and added a little bit of fun to the segment? kind of stupid to bitch about something that small, but whatever. i liked the denial of service joke.

that was one of darrens best segments he's done since the beginning of the first season.

  3. This episode is very refreshing from the others. I loved the RDP segment, especially when you talked about using nmap and other tools. It was kind of refreshing to just cut to the chase, cut the bullshit and do the important segments. Not sure if I want it to be like that every week, but I liked this episode a lot because of that.

The evil server segment cracked me up.

I'll add more later. I'm still watching Matts portion of the sho!

  4. loved the episode guys! the md5 seg was full of epic win that got my packet bunnies flowing fast!

the evil server segment was the best of the season. spooky, evil looking shit is always full of epic win.

  5. a good way to practice your coding skills is to build a mashup of something, anything really. build a blog, a website, a project that will motivate you to try new things, learn your shit and eventually become good at it.

read a lot of tutorials, study manuals, read books, experiment, and don't give up.

  6. good episode. the security segment was interesting. putty and cygwin are the shit. as far as music goes, i have a few GB of legally acquired music, i use winamp and manually create playlists for each artist. it is time consuming, but i don't know how to write a script that would automatically add all my music to winamp and sort itself in its own playlist. that would be nice.

im looking forward to the next lan party as well.

  7. I completely forgot it was Wednesday, so this is a very nice surprise.

I will edit this post later and include my thoughts on the show, fo sure.

btw, matt and shannon, i share your pain. fortunately, i had thanksgiving off, but i have to work christmas and news years this year.

  8. . Building a virtualized TOR server

    . Learn Bash Scripting

. Hacking Togethor a re-mastered Windows Live CD

. Studying for the Zend PHP5 Cert

    . Watch plenty of hak.5

. Buying each one of my geek friends a SATA HDD Multi-Function Dock with One Touch Backup from usb.brando

. Smoking Weed, Drinking Alcohol and kicking Darrens ass in UT99.

. Build my new girlfriend a website. She's really into photography, and wants to build a website/portfolio to branch out into the interwebs for her start-up.

Yup, that about sums it up. Happy Holidays too all.

The blocks might seem to dumb it down for some people, but there was nothing simple about it. You would ahve to watch that a couple of times to really understand any of it, and even then, the terms would still leave you walking through google to understand each tidbit and how they can be manipulated or exploited later on after you know what is going on. Try writing an IDS system without understanding any of this stuff they covered in th epast few shows. You won't get very far. While it might not seem like much yet, you have to combine all these things into workign knowledge and even then, you probably will want to read up more on it to fully grasp what this all means.

I agree completely. I thought the building blocks metaphore was an excellent approach at explaining how it works. It's geek talk 101, broaden your horizons. Computers are amongst the most complex and brilliant things on this earth, and expecting a 30 minute tv show to teach you the ins and outs of it is fool hardy. But, the stuff can be advanced. Go out there and buy a TCP/IP book or download an ebook and study it in depth, consistently in the long run, if you want to really learn how this shit works; you have to read and you have to study, you have to figure it out for yourself, if you truly want to be well rounded.

Hak.5 does a great job in presenting the material, simplifying it in a manner that most people can understand and making it entertaining at the same time. At the same token, they don't alienate the advanced audience either. I'm not talking about the hardcore elite, though.

One of the biggest things that i enjoy about hak.5 is they really broaden my horizons. I ALWAYS learn something new from each hak.5 episode.

  10. As soon as Darren pulled out the blocks I stopped watching.

I guess the metaphore was the "building blocks" of the TCP/IP OSI Model. I thought it was funny.

wireshark is an amazing tool. i'm anticipating the next episode soley for the advanced wireshark auditing and linux segment. i love linux.

  11. If you haven't already, use openDNS. It's really ez. on your kboard, press win key + r, type in "ncpa.cpl" without the quotes, then right click your LAN connection and go to properties, navigate to the "internet protocol [TCP/IP]" menu and and change your dns to these addresses.

    208.67.220.220

    208.67.222.222

    openDNS ftw!

  12. Very interesting episode. I already understand tcp/ip packets (been studying tcp/ip for years), but it was a humorous segment. Overall, the dos box was interesting, though I'm not a huge gamer. I didn't even know about Alice, so I'm def gonna check it out and recommend it to beginners who are curious about programming. The summarization of day con was interesting, I hope someone recorded it and posts some videos of the events on the web.

Great ep guys! I look forward to next week, Linux security? And finally using wireshark for security auditing? I look forward to it!
