You could try to include some form of steganography. Hiding things in pictures is easy, try to hide something in a text :P

I actually use Winamp for video :P and VLC when I need subtitles or some obscure codecs.

If you want to learn C you should check out "The C programming language" by B. Kerningham and D. Ritchie.
Unfortunately C is a little bit outdated, if you want to start making GUI apps quickly you should try Java or Visual Basic.

Right now it seems I will be able to get there, but it's still far enough in the future that everything may happen.
The hostel's site says they usually have room for walk-ins so I'm hoping that even if more people show up, we still will be able to get accommodation.

That's strange, the Gentoo minimal CD is just a shell, you have to download every single part of the system yourself, so it shouldn't need any of the files from the CD.
I recommend Gentoo if you have a lot of spare time and a strong motivation, because it will take you a lot of hacking do make most of the things work. On the bright side, you will only download the programs you want, and Gentoo is known to be one of the fastest distributions.

Another site worth visiting is the unofficial Gentoo wiki at www.gentoo-wiki.com with a lot of HOWTOs.
