{UK} Use a different Router with Sky Fibre Broadband?

I'm not going to lie, the Router Sky provide you with is one of the worst Routers I have ever used, Drop-outs all the time, No port forwarding!, Only DynDNS support, and lacking in many key features for what I use it for.

Can I use a different Router? If I buy one and unplug the Router that they give you and just plug that one in, will it work? and If so can anyone recommend a good router? I was thinking about building one but I would like a cheaper alternative, if there is a Router that I can use with Sky Broadband that has a GUI and I can SSH into or something (DD-WRT) and has all of he "bells and whistles" like USB ports would be great. i'm tired of drop outs and lack of features.

Just for reference the router that they gave me is a: Sagemcom F@ST2504n (6.14.6a4N_UNI)

Thanks in Advance :D
