  1. problem solved: it was indeed, as i suspected, a loose cable. i had a spare second to open it up and double check connections and tried it out; and works (well it is recognized in my computer and has power when windows is booted up, im trying it out as soon as i post this)

To me this doesn't make sense. I assume it wasn't the molex, because then it wouldn't have gotten any power, and if it was the SATA/IDE then you probably wouldn't have seen it in BIOS, but hey if it works for you, more power too you.

yeah; i know it doesn't make sense (it was the sata cable, though in bios it shows as pata) but it worked and thats all i was after; i wasn't trying to reinvent the wheel haha

im thinking; when i checked the connections it moved but it was barely noticeable; so maybe it was out just enough for windows to not see it but in just enough for bios to recognize it?

  3. Notice how a number of people have said check it at boot up or in bios.  Well, I can't make you take advice...

i said i have; or atleast i typed it and hit post (then again i did it on a school computer so its quite possible that it didn't go through)

  4. *device manager doesn't seem to have it at all; it has 2 cd rom drives (which i only have 2 physical drives, one cdrom and one dvd+-r/rw) and for some reason its showing 2 of my virtual drives?

You recently install somehting that is conflicting with them? You say "virtual" drives? Sound slike you did something in windows to cause this.

no; ive had 5 virtual drives on my computer for months now (i mount my game files on 4 of them; and when i download some new program i mount the image with the 5th)

i havn't done anything lately; im going to take the cover off tonight and double check the cables because im convinced it's the data cable that is bad or loose; otherwise why would it have power before boot up? maybe windows can't recognize it so the m/b cuts power after it realizes that it can't find it...?

i have another drive, picked it up today (my tech teacher had a spare one and let me borrow it to see if it's just the drive thats bad) so if its not just the cable than ill just swap them out and use the spare until i can get to the eletronics store and buy a new one (working 2 jobs and having a full highschool sched. isn't as easy as it sounds haha) circuitcity i noticed online had a pioneer on sale for like 36 bucks; i think maybe ill buy 2 or 3;put one in every coputer i own  :D you can never have enough dvd burners (especially going into architecture or mechanics; backing up your work haha)

  5. i don't think im over burning; and i  dont think im using it too often; at most it gets used to burn 15 dvds in a day every other month (back up itunes) and other than that; i may burn 1-3 dvds a week if that

i don't think it's dead though because like i said it has power at startup but when windows boots it gets killed.

il try device manager right now and let you know after i get back from school how it turned out

*device manager doesn't seem to have it at all; it has 2 cd rom drives (which i only have 2 physical drives, one cdrom and one dvd+-r/rw) and for some reason its showing 2 of my virtual drives? i have a picture but like i said; i have school in half an hour

  6. my dvd burner just stopped working; ive discovered that until windows starts up it has power, but as soon as windows xp starts to boot up power is killed; after i found out it wasn't working i rebooted and it said "drive 5 not found", so im hoping its just a loose cable but the computer hasn't been touched inside since i cleaned it out and that was a year ago.

i really need this i need to burn my music to a cd for lip sync (its tuesday) so id be thankful for any help at all

and if it isn't just a loose cable can anyone reccomend a brand of dvd burner? ive been through 3 total within 5 years (2 of them were stock on the computers i bought), and this one has barely been used

  7. how do you make an app portable? i want to make photoshop (cs3 extended) portable, along with a few other programs  portable and throw them on my new 1gig memory stick.

i was reading up on a few google searches; the main reason i want to do this is because the computers (at my school and next year at the college ive been accepted) don't all have the same software so it's a hassle to try and get one with the programs you need, i guess the tech guys didnt feel like taking a few extra minutes to make sure every machine had the same programs haha

this is for personal, solely for me, use only; if you were wondering

so basically the list i want to make portable is:

adobe photoshop cs3 extended (along with the other programs that come with it)

    microsoft word 2003

    microsoft powerpoint 2003

    microsoft excell 2003

chief architect (better homes and gardens) home designer suite 6.0

    itunes

    aim

and i also want to keep the file sizes down as much as possible without taking away many features; ill be buying a usb drive of about 4 gigs to put this all on (more if i need it, local circuitcity carries up to 8 gig drives) but i do want plenty of room to keep the picture files and documents on the same usb drive

    thanks in advance 8)

  8. Keeping the internal air temperature low is important. It will help all aspects.

so basically it doesnt matter if the hole lines up with the drives or not, because it will still lower case temps? that makes sense i guess; and the computer itself will be located in a basement where temp. is constantly 52 degrees f. so its not like it's in 100 degree heat running at full force (like my old computer that burned up haha)

  9. i could do that; but it wouldn't line up with the hard drives )they are set into the front of the computer, the case only goes about half way past the first drive)

and the first drive is not the one im worried about being too hot, as its fan is exposed (as opposed to being blocked by a hard drive with little space betweent the two)

  10. cut a 8cm hole in the side of the case, drill holes for screws, get a grill.

the case already has spots for a fan if thats what you're getting at; unless you mean cut the hole directly to the side of the hard drives? in that case; the door would interfere with those plans, as would the face of the computer (it has a weird decorative face on it, and it keeps the computer up off the floor; so i drilled some holes in the bottom for ventilation)

  11. how much would it affect the harddrives if i put 2 hard drives in an older computer (it only has 2 hard drive bays, vert. mounted) the computer itself has no fans other than the one on the power supply and on the m/b;  the reason im putting the 2 in there is because i have one that is big enough for average use (word documents, the os, internet etc) but i also do alot of photoshopping and itunes use, and also alot of use with sony vegas; so i bought another harddrive (160 gbs) and i want to put that in; but since ill only be using the second harddrive i thought id put it in the back slot, but when i do use it its going to be used extensively for a few hours at a time, so will this affect the harddrive or computer at all? because its not very well ventilated;

  12. What exactly does it do? Say there's no OS? Say it can't find a HDD? Screen go blank?

Sounds at first look like the Windows bootloader isn't working for some reason, perhaps it installed it on another drive or for whatever reason the BIOS can't hand control over.

    well it installs fully, and gets to the point where it tells me to restart (restart) and then it doesnt do anything, like it almost isnt recognising the os itself;

its installing on the right hard drive because i only put one harddrive in (the h/d that the os was originally on)

  13. Does Ubuntu work?

im not sure; i don't want to put anything other than windows on the computer because it's one that will commonly be used by some people that don't know much about computers (and windows is the only os i know really well and can help/automate as much as i can)

  14. Is the CMOS battery working, the HDD still fully functional, does it post, all the cables connected properly, etc. Do a run down over everything simple like connections and bios post, etc, and then start it up again.

i have; as far as i know the battery is working; the hard drive is fully functional; it's all kosher. i've hooked it all up three times; im pretty sure the cables are all ok. the hard drive works when attached to another computer; i had it hooked up to another winxp machine (because i wasn't going to let a 160gb harddrive just sit there in a dead computer) but i never used it; i just copied my old files from it when the old computer died. i didnt delete anything; but that shouldnt matter since im trying to do a fresh install

  15. i have an old pc; probably close to 5 years old now; it was fried once; all that was saved was the harddrive and dvd burner; it worked fine for another year after that happened, until the power supply melted and i put it up for a while; well i got  anew power supply and put it in, fired it up but it didnt work; so i reinstalled xp (was planning to do so anyway), but after it installs it doesn't do anything.... what am i doing wrong? i do a clean instlal every time and a full format of the hard drive (ive tried both fat 32 and that ntfs one). i want to use the computer as a host to my printers and music files, and without an os its usless to me. can anyone help please?

  16. I belive - Start :-> Shutdown and Pressing the Power button once are the same thing

I am not on my laptop at the moment but will have a look at my power options (I assume its XP?)

you assume right. like i said before though (or i think i said) i only press and hold the power for 5 seconds when its really hot (like when editing videos, watching videos, editing music, or just taxing the laptop pretty hard) usually i press it for a second or 2 and let it go, because it's always shut down when i use the button but sometimes it screws up when i do start>shutdown

  17. Ok as mentioned holding the power button for 5 seconds is basically pulling the plug... not good... help Windows out by letting it shutdown properly.

Have a look at your power options, when you close the lid tell it to shutdown.

I tottally understand about not wanting to rip your laptop apart ;) I bought a laptop of eBay (same model as my current laptop) all that it needed was a new CD drive... not a tough task now is it... somehow I've managed to destory the laptop tottally  Have a look for local laptop repair companys (If you live in the UK I know of somewhere that is very good and reliable) I am sure they can service it for you.

there isn't an option to shut down when lid is closed; only hibernate and sleep/standby.

now; if i use the power button but don't hold it down (ie just press it and letting go) and windows goes into the shut down steps, is this any better for it? because it's still going through the shutdown procedure but it's forced into it quickly instead of stopping processes, shutting down programs, etc....

  18. Does your battery take a full charge, or always charging?

Try running it without the battery and just use the power chord when your not away from a plug. Batteries can make the thing hot too if they are always charging. My laptops power supply gets hot when charging the battery and the battery gets hot while it charges. Unless your running off the battery, remove it. It only adds to the heat. Also, disable all sleep and hiberbate modes and just tell it to shutdown at instead.

Also, a can of compressed air can fix built up dust in two seconds and make things run A LOT COOLER, but you dont want to blow it directly into the back of the fan area without taking it apart first, or your just going to lodge it further into the machine and create more insualtion for heat build up.(make sure yoru grounded before working on the insides) You will notice a big difference once its cleaned. And dont take it in to curcuit city or best buy  to have them do it. They will just raid your hdd and copy all yoru files for their amusment, and probably not fix it anyway. I wouldn't trust them to do any work on a computer, let alone clean one properly without breaking it or causing ESD damage in the process.

i wouldn't haha. a coworker of mine also runs a home computer business and he would do it for free; but i do run it with the battery, and it takes a full charge (the battery and cord wore out a couple months ago at the same time, so i replaced both). but the heat is generally coming  from the back left corner, and the battery is in the lower right; that part keeps somewhat cool but the back and especially the left corner get really hot. i don't think this will help; but i notice that my fan isn't very stong; it hasn't decreased in proformance (it wasn't any stronger when it was new) but my my other gate way laptop's fan is much much stronger and quieter (you can barely tell its running), and that stays rather cool, it's about 2 years old now.

  19. if you hit the power button on a computer it shutsdown but its the exact same as start shutdown and um if your laptop over heat in the 5 second you shut down you got cooling issues

it doesn't over heat in those 5 seconds; but if left running while sitting on a surface, it will within 10 minutes guaranteed, and sometimes it doesn't shut down all the way when i do start/shutdown but goes into sleep; and everything is still running while it is in sleep it just shuts off the screen (same thing with the desktop i have that burned out). it doesn't over heat while i use it because i prop it up on my leg so it gets alot of air flow; im going to circuitcity this week to buy a cooling stand for it because im sick of it over heating.

  20. What Brand and Model of laptop are we talking about? Laptops generally do run hot - prehaps yours just needs to be cleaned (Physically remove dust etc)

I don't understand what you mean by 'using the power button' are you forcing it to powerdown by holding the button in for 5 seconds, or are you just closing the lid of your laptop and letting it hibernate / stand by, I have seen problems with brining laptops out of stand by and hibernation - my current laptop (An ASUS F3J running Windows Vista) is a real pain!

If you are tavelling alot I would invest in a Solid State HDD

it's a gateway; its about 4 years old now maybe? i don't know the model or anything. i know laptops do run hot, but this is insanely hot; hot enough that i can't hold it, and its not just the laptop its the power cord too; its a brand new cord and it gets just as hot. It probably does need to be cleaned/get a new cooling system; but i don't want to tear apart my laptop to clean it, right now this is the only computer i have that supports itunes and works. how much would it cost to get the cooling fixed, rough guess?

and; instead of shutting down the proper way, i hold the power button until it shuts off and then i close the lid. sometiems i have to leave really quick, and the computer doesn't always shut down all the way but goes to sleep instead, so to make sure it shuts down i hold the power button. usually though i do shut it down properly; but it's just been screwing up over and over again and id like to find out how to fix it if i can

  21. I'm in a similar situation, I am going to college in the fall.  I just built my rig last year, and spent 1500 on it.  I am going to buy a asus eeepc, and use that for class.  I am going to bring my desktop for my dorm, and my eeepc for lugging around.

same here really; i have a nice dell pc that ill take and lock in my dorm with one of those cable locks; and ill pretty much use it as a server or get a wireles keyboard and mouse and hook it up to my tv (i already have my tv, a 42 inch sylvania lcd) but i still want a nice laptop so that i don't have to bring home my pc over breaks just to use all my crap (the 2 colleges im looking at have short semesters and long vacations; thanksgiving vacation was almost 4 weeks, christmas was a month and they get out for summer in mid may i think)
