    Yes you need at least 2 NICs... one for the "Red" (WAN) interface, and one for the "Green" (LAN). You can add additional NICs if you want to have additional LAN segments at the router as well (DMZ, putting WAPs on different segments, etc.)

    Essentially, it is a linux firewall, uses a stripped down linux kernel. Setup is pretty easy.

    1) Download cd image from http://smoothwall.org/get/ and burn to cd

    2) Scrape together any old hardware you have and build a pc like any other. Min specs can be found on smoothwall site. Add in you NICs

    3) Boot pc from burned image CD to start setup *Note This will format your hard drive.*

    4) After drive is formatted and files are copied it will take you to config screen. Here you will assign which NIC is for LAN and WAN (and any others you may have) there is a scan option which will find installed NICs. Enter your LAN and WAN ip addys (DHCP is available on the WAN side as well as PPPoE and static), set hostname, passwords, and enable/disable LAN DHCP.

    5) Once initail setup is complete, there is a web based interface that you use to control it just enter your smoothwall ip w/ proper port i.e. 192.168.100:445 and you are there. You can remove keyboard, mouse monitor at this point, there is a command shell inside the web interface.

    Now you are ready to roll. :D

    Yes in most cases 700MHz is overkill, but I have several of the blocklists from bluetack.co.uk, and a few from other places, loaded into it. It actually alters the IPTables. This can really put a hit on your ping times unless you have something semi-beefy running it. I am pretty sure this is what killed the last smoothie I had, just too much processor time. I have a 2.6GHz processor in the one I installed at work. That has blocklist, content filter (keyword scanning and rating types), and AV scanner loaded on it. My pride and joy :D

    Be warned some low end GFX cards used "TurboCache" in nVidias and "HyperMemory" in ATi chips, this means the card comes with a very small amount of memory on the GFX card (typically 64MB) and then uses a protion of your system memory. This really hurts performance because your reducing the amount of memory your CPU can use and as I said earlier it is slower to use that memory.

    They do this in actual cards??? I have only ever seen this w/ "on-board" video chipsets.

    Wow! Is that cut out or have you just stuck paper stencils were you are going to cut that look the same colour of the wall behind?

    Thanks man. The metal of the case has actually been cut out. There is a plexiglass sheet riveted to the case panel (that is what the four corner holes in the first pic I posted are for). The wall behind is just there so everytihng would show up better in the pic. The actual case that this goes on has blacklights installed in it. Looks pretty sweet at night.

    I work at a machinist, part of my job is to program the CNC equipment. This was done on waterjet machine, 50,000lbs of pressure in a 0.015" stream. Cuts through sheet metal like butter.

    I answered "Yes" even though it was not me who got it. A friend of mine got a free iPod from one of those places where you get like 5 other ppl to sign up. I think it was www.freeipod.com although I am not sure. He gets a crapload of spam now, but hey, it's a free ipod.

    I finally have a new Smoothwall pc (old one crapped all over itself and died). Now I have rebuilt it. I have made it better... stronger... faster.

    700Mhz of firewall goodness, try and break through that bitches.

    um.... actually, don't. I like my network intact. Probably the wrong place to taunt ppl about my network security.

    If I were you I'd try to even out the design a little bit. It seems very lopsided to the right.

    Well, there are handles and such on the panel. The border of the pic is not the entire side panel just the size of the plexiglass. For instance, this is a panel from an older case.... (which I actually cut upside-down)

    Are you going to cut it out or engrave it?

    I am going to cut it out on waterjet machine, I still have some work to do on it, like the little pads inside the Logitech logo have to go. Either that or connect them to outside. Maybe I could glue them to the plexi backing?

    Harddrive problems

    What's this???? a thread about bad drives and nobody mentioned the old IBM "DeathStar"... what is the world comming to. All of my maxtors have held up pretty good, I actually still have a few 2 and 4GB maxtors lying around that are still functional. For a while tho, every WD drive I bought lasted almost exactly 2 years, then died.

    In addition to the PSU wattage, check the fan on the 6600GT. I have seen fans die and the card burns out. W/ something like FEAR running it would only take a couple of minutes to kill the card w/o a fan. Do you monitor system temps? It could also be a combination of the 2, your graphics card got too hot, causing it to draw more power than the PSU could handle and blew out a cap on the PSU.

    OMFG, Please tell me that people are not this pathetic and scared. Go to the site and check out the lemmings that automatically go along w/ the article... sometimes(often these days), I am ashamed to be an american.
