  1. I want to make my own TrueCrypt volume, but I'm having trouble thinking up a extension for it to impersonate. I need an extension that could feasibly hold 200-300 MB (so no picture/text files), yet is so ubiquitous that nobody would really want to click on it to see what it is/does (ruling out executables and video for the most part). So I'm wondering if the Hak5izens could assist me in my time of n00bishness.

  2. I've been hearing all these good things about H.264, like how it's better than just about any other format for small video sizes and resolutions, but I'm wondering if it's true. I ask because I'll be redownloading some videos I lost when my backup died and I want to know if I should go for it over DivX, which is another one of the choices. I'll be looking at the videos on either my 15.4" laptop or a PMP; I don't know which yet, but it'll at least have a 2.4" screen.

  3. Get a used Apple Macbook Pro if you can. the new ones are not much better than the resent Santa Rosa ones.

I have thought about a refurb MBP, and with my educational discount I could probably pick a nice one up for cheap. But Alienware lappys are probably going to be out of my price range.

  4. I'm in the market for a new laptop and don't know what I want to get, so I just want to see what's out there. I know a few people on here frequent some sites like this so I'm wondering where you would go.

Also, if anyone has any laptop suggestions I'm welcome to them. I'd basically only use it for web browsing, a bit of coding, and some rare gaming excursions. Only exceptions:

No Dells (dude, I'm not getting one.)

    No Sonys

    under $1500 if possible

    At least a 15.4" screen.

    Thanks in advance!

  5. OK, in the most recent live episode, Darren said that since the U3 drives have a CDFS partition, older machines can think they're bootable CDs and boot off them. Now that got me thinking: instead of flashing a U3 partition with a bootloader, or some super-small version of Linux, couldn't you use something along the lines of GParted to make a CDFS partition on any flash drive, and thusly be able to do all of the things he said without having to have a U3 drive? Or is there something I'm missing?

  6. I had been using nUbuntu, but while waiting for them to make a new CD their domain expired three days ago, so that's out. Now I'm looking for something new. I had heard about some, like PHLAK or Backtrack or Whoppix or Knoppix STD, but I had never really used them, but I bet a few of you have. So, by a show of hands, what do you think is the best pen-tester?

  7. I ran it for a while on a GP laptop, it was all-around decent until you got into wireless, when it all went to hell. I decided after like two weeks to just try something new, which led me to OpenSuSe, Fedora C6, and finally Ubuntu, what I'm using today. However, I still use the standard Zenwalk distro as a fileserver. it does what i want it to quite well, but i don't really like how port 22 seems to be open on the default install.

In Summation: Zenwalk on a desktop is all right, on a laptop it's decent until you get Wi-Fi, as a server it's excellent.

PS, how do you connect to an Ubuntu computer from some other OS? Every time I try to connect via FTP/SSH it seems as if I can't open the port.
