Before anyone asks, my pc is HIGHLY modded and overclocked to the moon:
Motherboard: Tyan Thunder n4250QE (S4985)
CPU: 4 x AMD Opteron (1207) 8220 2.8GHz
RAM: 8 x Samsung DDR2-667 2048MB REG ECC
Graphics Card: PNY Quadro FX5500 1GB
This is a water cooled pc, spent something like £5,000 on i'm running Windows Xp Proffessional Edition Sp 2.
Have ordered Windows Xp x64.
Looks like something Metatron spec’ed some time back.

Well each to his own, I'm sorry you didn't like your experience in #hak5 but we try to keep it as clean as possible and to be honest 12 lines of code as a hello isn't really how we do things...
You're welcome back if ever you feel like trying again but don't paste anything longer than 5 lines, especially as a 'hello'.
OK I will do it in Fortran if I comeback :D

Well, you'll probably end up writing something that you would normally script.
How's this:
Make a calendar app that warns you a week before something happens so you still have time to get a gift.
What sucks is that I don't have a clue what either you or your teacher would consider 'something that people would use in their day to day life'. That description is decidedly vague.
I decided to go with this idea, thanks everyone.

Solaris is great on Sun hardware (SPARC) as it was designed from the ground up for their hardware, but it doesn’t feel the same on non Sun hardware. Hopefully, with it truly open to developers they can fix the speed issues you tend to get with non SPARC boxes.

I have a small project for university, I have to write a program in two days and it has to be something that people would use in their day to day life. There is one restriction it has to be in C, now this isn’t an issue but, I could do with some ideas on what you think would be a useful day to day program.

Pay a couple of crack heads to anally rape him for a few hours. It will fuck him up for life and he may even kill himself.

You would lose a chunk of time but it’s more about playing around with distributed compilation then time, although one of the reasons I’m trying it, is to see what kind of time will be involved, and if there are any big issues that arise when spreading the task over a large network.
-
I’m living in student accommodation, so I’m limited on space to build a cluster. I help my universities IT team out from time to time (mainly coding C/C++), in exchange for access to one of the computer rooms out of hours, so I have access to around 120 computers and a server room.
It’s going to be a few years before I can find the cash for multiple Mini-ITXes, but it sound like a cool project.
-
I would go with NetBSD and stick Xen on it, and use X over SSH. Then you can use it as a testing ground.
-
Yeah, it's more for, fun and/or learning experience. I’ve got a stack of old laptops and desktops I picked up from local companies (dumpster diving), and I have some free time this weekend, so I thought it would be interesting to play around with distributed compiling.
-
I want to install Gentoo on a load (27) of old laptops and desktops (mostly P2’s to P4’s), my idea is to build a version of SLAX (GNU C/C++ compiler, GNU Make, distcc, ccache, dmucs, ccontrol, crosstool, distccWebView and tcpbalance) and burn a load of copies, then have them run on a large number of universities computers, so I can cut the Gentoo install time, by using a distributed compiler.
My question is, are there any live discs available that can do this, or is there a better way to slash the install times?

If it offered 10 gigabit Ethernet over CAT6a or CAT7 it might be worth it, but it seems like a waste of money.

ive been meaning to expirement with BSD. I started duel booting mandriva/windows a few months ago and have acclimated myself to linux. it would be nice to replace windows with BSD... I dont play games so not much need for windows. :D
I love Linux/BSD/Unix for servers and computer security related things but I don’t use it for my desktop, as I find I get more work done in Windows and I like the software for it more.
With Putty, Winscp and FileZilla, I have no need to ever have a monitor, keyboard or mouse hooked to my Linux/BSD boxes, except for when I installed OpenBSD on my file server and Debian on my web/mail server.
I dual boot between Debian and Windows on my laptop but I still spend most of my time in Windows and just SSH into my Linux or BSD boxes when I need a particular tool.
Software I need:
Vegas 7.0 (I work pastime as an editor/ camera man at weddings)
DVD Architect 4.0
SONAR 6 Producer Edition
Microsoft Visual Studio
Borland C++Builder
Adobe Photoshop CS2
Adobe Illustrator CS2
MS Visio
MS Word
MS PowerPoint
MS Excel
Dreamweaver
I know there are similar products for *NIX, but I don’t feel they are as good, and the price isn’t a huge issue as I get student discount.
----------------------------------------------------------------
I don't play games.

Yeah, it would make a great segment for the show.

I just bought a used “Sun Fire 3800â€, with eight 900Mhz UltraSPARC III and 64GB of memory, that’s the oldest computer I own.
64 GB of memory eh? Wow, that's a lot for such an old comp.
I think they where only released two years ago. I like Sun equipment as the second hand market is large and the amount of people that buy second-hand equipment is small, so you can pick up two to four year old equipment at a fraction of the original price.
My server is a used Sun V65x server with:
Dual 3.2GHz Xeon’s,
Four 73GB SCSI drives
8GB of memory
Dual integrated 10/100/1000-NIC
ATI Rage XL with VGA ports front and rear
Three USB ports
8 X DVD-ROM Drive
Floppy Drive
And all of that only cost me £720. I run Debian on it.

I’m looking for a firewire control surface for Sony Vegas 7. I have between £800 to £1000 and I’m thinking of picking up an M-Audio Projectmix.
Is there a better control surface for Sony Vegas in my price range and what would you recommend?
what programs do you have on your stick ?
