  1. I dumped comcrap and saving a more than 100 bucks a month. After seeing over 40 channels with over the air tv (living neat a large city), did not need cable tv with a new isp. Cut cost even more. My brother said I could leach off his wifi, but I prefer not to do that. Even with downloading the old ubuntu repo and tons of cd's, did I ever even get close to 200meg per month.

  2. "end of the world". Not even funny. As for all the hackers on one vessel in international waters where law does not apply, is a recipe for disaster. I wonder what Sony, Microsoft and all the big proprietary companies would pay to see a ship like that disappear. Not that it would happen. You could not pay me enough to get on that vessel.

  3. I have used Ubuntu since version 6. one thing I have learned is that it is beta still till a few months later after being introduced. Most of the debian based distros are going back to debian and not using ubuntu as a base anymore. I have ubuntu to keep my finger in it, but I would not use it as a production machine. Ubuntu is becoming too microsoft like and that is being nice.

  4. Until we finally dumped comcrap, we went through the same thing when problems happened. Ironically I used to be a tech so I have seen both sides. What happened in the industry was that a lot of tech people did not have people skills, so companies started hiring sales type people for the help desk, but those people did not have a clue about computers. Customer still loses out. The story even gets more interesting than that, but I will reserve comment for some future point.

  5. i enjoyed this one. i like how darren set up a little schooling session. would like to see more of that. jasons segment was really cool too. the whole dam show was good.

    also trivia graphic fail.

Only see episode 807 not 808. Where is it available?

  6. yes its called "The Net 2.0". the only thing cool about it was the title.

Funny and it might be more true than you know. probably never see that movie on MSnbc.

Spent half the night fixing a php install remotely via the command line using ssh. Then had to update some code on a few web pages. Just want to sleep........

  7. The trivia answer is "The Net"

irected by Irwin Winkler. Starring Sandra Bullock, Jeremy Northam, Ken Howard. The net is an excellent movie! It's about Angela Bennett(in a great performance of Sandra Bullock) who is a computer expert who works for the Cathedral ...

  8. Re-usable energy I like the sound of that. Would be interesting to see, how you are going to be building a wind generator with that motor.

I also plan on building an off grid solar battery system. To power up my stuffs at home, I just bought a power meter to measure how much watts my electronics are consuming, the power bill has been too expense and if I can put this system operational, than it will shave a few $100.00 dollars off the bill.

We are collecting silicon diodes from old electronics to make solar cells, but not sure that is practical.

    http://www.instructables.com/id/Make-a-Sol...l-using-Diodes/

We plan to take wire from old ac motors and and make stator coils. Hard drive magnets will drive create the electricity in the coils. We probably use a vertical axis wind turbine to rotate the magnets. Right now we are working on a mini prototype. I have wired the coils, but need to put it all together.

As for the earth battery, we have tested different metals to see what gives the best voltage. It does make a difference.

Wind generator > ac-dc converter > voltage regulator > battery > load to use the electricity (i.e. dc-dc ps > computer.) Led lighting can become very valuable here.

    No wind then

Mirrors to concentrate sunlight > stiriling engines > etc etc.

    If it rains then

A downward spout with waterwheel > etc etc..

    last resort

    Bicycle > etc etc...

  9. well technically if they were using the garage they would be in or near a car. so they could just plug the phone into the 12v.

Guess I should have been more specific. I meant the android was stone cold dead and just not that the battery had lost power. God forbid that would happen though. We have pentium ones still being used on occasion.

  10. i know i know of course. but i really dont have a garage. i wished i did.

Cool. If their android died, would they actually have to reach in their pocket and use a key. We have been able to do the same thing with zero code on the client side. I guess all that is for security.

  11. i liked this episode. the whole garage door thing is not for me though. i dont have a garage.

Your kidding, right? You might be missing the point. You can control almost anything using the same method. Just have to adapt the idea. We control things with a web server also, but I do it a bit differently. In the end, you have a very useful tool if you think outside the box.

  12. heat guns are awesome. i have a hardcore one that goes more then 1500*. you could melt some ones face off with it.

Years ago I had my face disfigured from an black ex military person because I had the wrong color skin. This is was same day the police officers out in California were acquitted. Unfortunately I was not able to be Joe karate. Just glad he did not kill me. Marring people is not a very adult mentality. My disfigured face has cost me some promotions and potential jobs. God I hope I do not see that jerk again or I might lose my penchant for pacifism.

  13. Feel like a kid again with all the new puter toys.

First computer: ibm 360 model 40.

Current computers: a plethora of single core (intel/amd/etc) obsolete systems being used for a variety of projects.

Used more operating systems than most people, but I prefer 'nix based systems.

Worked non-management positions in computing for umpteen years including more than 10 years as a mswindows admin.

Have a sheepskin for a non-computing degree but have about 50 college hours in extinct computing.

Could care less about certifications. Just give me a manual and I will take to it like a duck to water. But then who needs to rtm.

Still have lots to learn as things change so fast.

Love to re-purpose, especially computers and related equipment.

    Love to make diy gadgets.

Lost my better half, but still have the most special daughter in the whole world.

Some buddies and I are planning to restart our old band from years ago.

    etc etc...

  14. I wouldn't say Windows sucks, it may not be as good as Linux but it still do a good job.

There are certain things you can't do with Linux that you have to do with Windows.

2 reasons for BOSD, hardware issue or software issue (have you updated any driver or install any software lately) if not it sound more like a hardware issue to me.

I have no skills what so ever, but I do know how too cut and paste......

  15. would love to hear how this goes been wanting my own windmill for some time :)

Will do. There are a zillion sites with details and videos on how to do it. It is a shame how much people discard that can be reused.

  16. We are pretty much on a $0 computer budget right now, but we have lots of old computers. Thanx to the people who are coming out with linux for older hardware, we are still continuing to reuse what we have.

ar430w(with web server) + hp jet direct = home automation controller.

P1 (plus mirror and glass) has become a tele-prompter.

p3 + old wifi router are becoming a wifi robot. (stepper motors from old 5 1/4 inch drives will power it and do the steering.)

i486 laptop is used to fire air cannons and air bottle rockets.

Pt/p2's used to control Halloween and holiday animations

I have a p2 that is used as a web server for web pages we create and as a mt-daapd music server. It also hold files when we are moving data from one computer too another.

Someone just gave me an old dryer. I will probably pull the motor and use wire to build a vawt (wind generator) to power the computers. Plan to turn the backyard into an earth battery to power things also.

I am just an amateur at all this and have no engineering experience at all, but the internet is a wonderful place to do research.

  17. The $_GET told me what I needed to know. Now to see if I can make a usb parallel printer cable controllable. Just need a female Centronics connector and a couple of logic chips. You can do so many thing when you have no idea of what you are doing. I think that is how TAE did things.

    Tesla rules.

  18. lol

If you use a line or two off the parallel port and do pretty much the same thing. All you doing is just controlling ones and zeros. (on and offs). I do agree the programming part could not be any easier, though I wish the php code for this project was published.
