Smoothwall went straight on no issues. The motherboard is a P6BAT-ME Ver 5.4 with a P3 500MHz slot 1. One intel and one dlink network card installed. One stick of 128mb ram. The cmos battery was dead that was the only issue. Its a strange old thing thats for sure.

Got bored, found some old hardware lying around and installed smoothwall. A bit like (Episode 7x18, Building a high performance home router) but not as compact. It works fine and cost nothing to make.
