http://arduino.cc/en/Main/ArduinoEthernetShield
or a Bluetooth module and or maby wifi ?
edit:
just went on the droid market and found this
http://www.arduino.cc/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1284455681

OH, the subtitle says random tech fact, I thought it was just any fact. I'm sure all of you know this one, but the first found "bug" in a computer system was in fact a moth trapped in between the points of a relay.
^I loled
I has a droid ;3.

Too bad you used instructables. That site is so full of fail it's not funny.
O can ye recommend a better site then? :P

I think we need a place to put "cool hardware" that we could possibly "exploit" to use for the "greater good"
-
Only if you rooted it to install duke nukem and a wardriving app.
we should totally try that ^_^

I've never had problems with smoothwall. Backup to floppy isn't that big a deal. I usually use fairly old hardware when setting up smoothwall boxes, they usually have a floppy in them still.
it still would be nice if they would add a flash drive option to backup to but like you said about the old hard ware
-
Didn't say you did not try, I was simply suggesting something to help you out.
sorry kind of snapped been trying for the better half of two days to fix this
-
Have you checked their website for more troubleshooting details.
have yet to receive help on that and no its not for lack of trying

So I a thought (o god the pain) XD any how could you attach another hdd to the smoothwall rig and get network storage out of it ? I mean you would probably have to modify something but has any one herd of this or seen an add on?

Unfortunately only for the IP7100-processor or higher, the DIR 655 uses a 5000-series processor :(
It's really a shame, there's so much more the 655 could do, like openVPN, NAS over USB-port .....
This is the best router-distro I've come across, it has almost everything :
My box is an old pentium with 512MB RAM and 2 giga-NIC's, works great .
There are also special versions for certain router-boards :
nice O.O soooooo much i need to try out now XD
-
There are several router firmwares out there, the ones I can think of are Open-WRT, DD-WRT and Tomato. From my understanding you will be better off with DD-WRT, that's what most users use nowadays.
This article can tell you a bit more than I can.

thanks
From the dd-wrt forum - "The new d-links dir-655 & Co. won't be supported, becose they use Ubicron architecture - AND this is not open sorce, thre are no tools/library fore this crap! "You want to find a broadcom/atheros based router if you want custom linux firmware, or a small, low power x86 or embeded platform for something like PFsense, Monowall, Smoothwall or IPCop.
& thanks

I think it should.
It might still work since the chip is insulated with hot glue ... but I'm not going to try it.
