  1. Great episode. Mubix's segment was very useful. Glad to see that kind of content back on the show. The little reference to Mrs. Pronobozo's "bow" made me chuckle.

  2. Darren,

Mubix did great as always. He just seemed a little extra..happy and laid back. :-)

Wish I were more of a coder re: the ducky exploit. I'm learning as quickly as I can. Information security is a moving target when it comes to study. I told my Brother-in-law, who recently became a doctor that "well, at least in your profession, human physiology doesn't change every 3 weeks. :-D )

Keep up the good work. Looking forward to the show settling down again in new digs.

  3. Good segment by Mubix. Made me very curious about that device and it's capabilities. Did he have a couple of beers before taping? He seemed a little.....relaxed. :-D

Am I correct in thinking that, based on this, Matt is no longer a part of the crew?

if so, it is rather sad. I definitely understand the need to get the career going, but I always looked forward to his segments.

Matt, you will be missed, but good luck on your other pursuits. I'll definitely add your blog to my list of sites to check out.

Can we expect to see the return of Matt anytime this or next season? His segments on enterprise IT and overall different perspective are, in my opinion, an important part of the show.
  5. Love the beanie, Jen.

Darren: What happens when you plug the USB into Linux without that crypto package installed, or Windows/OS X?

I can field that questions somewhat. The drive will not mount in Windows. Unless that customs officer is running Ubuntu with the crypto, it will come up as unformatted. Windows prompts you to format it.

I want to keep all my stuff as native to Linux as possible, but on occasion I do have to securely pass info to someone who uses Windows/Mac/whatever. This is where TrueCrypt has value because it can be installed on all such platforms.

There could be a utility for Windows out there which allows you to read Linux-encrypted volumes. What would be even cooler is some kind of common encryption API between different platforms.

    (A work in progress) :-)

  6. Actually, I came up with a solution. Going to get a couple of smaller drives, RAID 1 them, and then RAID 10 the rest for the images. :-)

    All,

I'm doing my first ESX server installation. Single HP server. 4x300gb drives set up in a RAID5 array by default. Here's my question:

I know with ESXi it often comes shipped as a firmware install from some vendors because of the small footprint. This is good because the hypervisor stuff doesn't need to take up disk space (which can be used for the images).

With the ESX configuration, I'm wondering how to approach the install with regards to the actual location of the ESX install on the disks. Should I create a separate small disk striped across all 5 for the ESX, leaving the rest for images? Or should I just install it to the current logical disk and have the images in a folder. IOW, I'm curious about the best practices regarding separating the ESX files from the images themselves. Not sure if I'm making sense here. :-)

Thanks in advance for any input.

  8. Darren,

Great content! I thought you did a very good job of presenting some really useful stuff.

But where's the crew? I like the variety and studio setting. You guys work well together, and the change of "theme" between the topics helps balance the show a bit.

That aside, keep up the good work.

after watching this episode i was wondering if you could do the same thing with an iphone or ipod touch

Not sure it's possible to set up a VPN on an iPod. ;)

    Guys,

MUCH better show. You all seemed more relaxed and the content was really good. Also, I liked Darren's camera work on the closeups of the Kindle config. Very helpful. Good segment about the Kindle. Wish I could afford one. :-)

The only thing I "might" have changed would have been to break up Darren's VPN segment into two shows or into a mini-series of segments like Kevin's ESX series. VPN is a big topic. You could have then let Matt change it up a bit after the mid break with something different. But I'm quibbling at this point. The VPN segment was good.

The show had a much smoother pace and you all seemed to have more fun. I think the longer time allowed for this.

    Keep it up guys!

  9. I really like the idea of expanding on the spotlight with open source goodies. DH, I am in love with your list. Wow!

    Darren,

Thanks! It's a work in progress and I'm constantly adding to it. Let me know if you want to collaborate on it or something. You probably know of quite a few that could be added.

  10. Darren,

This episode was better. I can tell you're trying to focus more on content. Don't get me wrong, I liked the goofing around stuff too. It's good to see you guys have fun doing this. I think it would be a blast, personally, in spite of all the hard work you guys put in.

I like having multiple segments. Things get changed up a bit, and if there's one topic that doesn't really appeal to me, then the other(s) likely will. But yet, some topics I think require a bit more "depth". Splitting it up would be good depending on the topic. I also like what Matt did with the VMWare series, spreading it over multiple weeks.

More time would be great, but I understand about the sustainability thing.

There aren't a lot of shows out there like this(I actually know of no others) and it's something I look forward to every week. I'm glad to see you're not above hacking the format to make it even better. :-)

  11. As a follow-up, the TX power was set for 0dbm so I bumped it up to 8. I do have a better range now, but I had assumed that this was a gain setting over the normal output and would not be needed. Did anyone else out there have to adjust this?

Also, although the antenna is wired to the Antenna 2 connector on the circuit board, I get better results when I set it for Antenna 1 in the gui.

  12. Hey all,

Got my Pineapple in the mail yesterday. I plan to build my own soon but I've got a pen test project coming up in the next few days and this will be a good object lesson for the office workers at our client site. Great job on this project Darren!

That being said, my first observation about the Fonera was the very weak signal. I'd say that if it gets beyond a couple of feet from my system it's no longer picked up. I played around a bit with the settings in OpenWRT installed to no avail. I'm going to try it again from home this evening where there's less a chance for wireless interference, but my feeling is that I'll have the same results. Any suggestions? It's quite possible that I've simply misconfigured it or done something stupid, but I haven't really done much of anything except for troubleshooting after the fact.

    Thanks

    David H.
