Ive been working on a carpc project for a while now. (garage is too cold in the winter) Ive been blogging about it on my site. right now im using relays wired to the parallel port for controlling the car but i plan on switching to FT245s.
As for power, im using an inverter but i plan on switching to a dc-dc converter (hint: look up mastero psu).

Personally, i like it the way it is. All I have to do is load the file onto the SD card and my pocket pc can play it right off.

I like reading on the computer more because I dont haft to hold a book. Just sit and read. Don't really highlight stuff, but at least with the computerized version you can copy/paste into a notes doc to keep track of the material.
Desktops in every classroom with the bare minimum and exercises pre-loaded either on the computers locally or on a network share. No laptops. Too much trouble like said and since the students can use them for personal uses all of the stuff they use in their free time is available to them during school time. With locked down desktops, there wouldn't be.
With desktops in every classroom, there would be less need for computer labs as well, though one or two may still be useful for the occasional project.
You can always lock down the computer but there is no way to make it 100 percent foolproof. They locked down the computers at my old school but you were required to have a memory stick to save files on. I just used opera for irc and web browsing, and ultra explorer for other stuff. Ultra explorers built in command line sometimes came in handy. :P
Plus being friends with the teachers can have its benefits.
PS, I brought my laptop to school all the time in high school. Now my laptop hardly leaves my side.

Less monitors please. Other than that Awesome. I cannot have more than 2 or 3 computers at a time or I just end up wasting power.
To each their own, that's what I always say. Just because you cant use more than 3 computers effectively doesn't mean others cant. My computer has 4 monitors and I have used all four frequently.

Believe it or not, Turning off your hardware can help. I dont remember the exact numbers but what people save by observing this occasion does help.
The only reason I cant observe this is because I live in the Fargo area and I need my sump pump. My original plan was to flip the breaker and just use the battery backups on my personal computers, servers, and other networking hardware.

Paranoid? If your not a criminal, you have nothing to worry about. What reason would they have to come to your house in the first place? Law enforcment always had the right to search your hard drive if it was confiscated in some sort of crime or warrant search.
If you really are that worried, start using TrueCrypt and protect your stuff you have in question.
You would like to think that but If they happened to see your hard drive and you have cracking tools because you security test, or you have explosive recipes because you like making cherrys, that can cause alot of trouble for you. Even if you are innocent. You may be innocent untill proven guilty but some things are pretty convincing.

Many true hackers have tried to do their part in showing the difference between hackers and criminals by doing things like writing papers and making videos. Unfortunately your average john doe wont likely be interested in just randomly finding out what a hacker is for himself. In the end, many of these papers only preach to the choir. If you wanted to quickly end the criminal stereotype you would have to mass broadcast a message that would reach Mr and Mrs Doe. Hollywood prefers to make the hacker the criminal in the story and it is very unlikely they will make a movie where a hacker is the hero. Maybe they could sell it as a MacGyver spin off. The quickest way would be to take over and broadcast a message on all networks possible which would be a ... crime. The only other way I can think of that could end the stereotype is a change in the education systems.
tl;dr: It is a nice paper, but the people who need to, likely wont read it.
