Ok after a good few hours of reading, I have a grasp of how it would be possible - but unfortunately, I do not have that level of access to the server. A quick rundown for anyone searching... Create the PHP file which will basically create a temporary file. Inside this file is the commands for the nix command nsupdate server localhost zone subdomain.domain.com update delete subdomain.domain.com A update add subdomain.domain.com 14400 A new_ip_address send Then using, exec('/bin/nsupdate /path_to_temp_file', $result) That will run the command and change the DNS details, not massively complex, but unless you have decent rights to the server, you'll just get an access denied error. Time for me to close this project!

Hi, I've always used DynDNS to manage the dynamic IP of my home server - but considering I have a proper domain for my business - I was wondering if I could maybe create a subdomain to manage my dynamic IP. My webserver is rented and not onsite - but is it still possible to use it to manage the IP of my home file server? If so, how? Edit: I have pretty thorough access to the web server (being dedicated), I can manage the DNS zone settings manually - but is there a way to get my server to update those, perhaps with a php script or otherwise. I have set it up manually now - but I don't want to have to change it myself every time the DSL modem redials. Ben

Lol, maybe its not that slow, I kicked off a couple of file transfers from the 1TB disk backup, I left it overnight and it managed to comfortably copy about 350GB in <7 hours, which equates to roughly 50GB per hour, which is about 14MB p/s - I suppose thats not too bad. Guess I won't buy any more hard drives after all, I'll stick with these until 1 fails :D

....but no Linux :razz: I've got a new desktop... 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Quad 2GB Kingston Ram 2x Hitachi 250GB SATA II (Matrix Raid 120GB Stripe / 170GB Mirror) 320MB BFG nVIDIA 8800 GTS OC And currently I'm just running Windows XP MCE and obviously it runs sweet. I do a decent amount of video editing on Adobe Premiere Pro. What's the best operating system to take full advantage of my hardware. I don't really use Vista because its been horrifically slow to use, and it doesn't run CS2 or PP remotely well (probably given the fact they're not Vista compatible). I've probably answered my own question here, I've never used x64 XP - I've always heard it was a bit of a hack, but I've got a valid licence from University for it, so I could still run it if it would perform better. Thoughts guys?

Thanks for the quick reply, I used the original drivers the first time round - but they were so damn slow, so I found Dell's card (which is basically the same) and nicked their firmware and driver because they were much newer! It performs much better on the Dell drivers anyway, the bottleneck must be the drives then. So you think I should run my two 250's in the M/S config (they're the newest). If I could sell the mixed 200GB's I would gladly buy 2 more Hitachi 250GB's, but the trouble is, theres no real market for 2nd hand drives. And I'm pretty sure that if I run them all as slaves it will kill the overall performance. And if I just keep them, I'm not sure I need 1.3TB of storage. Ben

I've probably made roughly 3000 mistakes setting up this array, but I'm pretty new to RAID 5. My good 'ole file server is starting to worry me as it now contains 650GB of important data and its all single disks. So I bought a cheap raid controller off the net, a LSI Megaraid I4 . My HDD collection consists of.. 2x 250GB Hitachi 1x 200GB Maxtor 1x 200GB Samsung 1x 200GB Western Digital I popped all the drives into the array with 4 Masters and 1 Slave. Set up with a RAID 5 config with 2 logical drives, 1x 10GB and 1x760GB. Uptime is not 100% important to me (being a home server), so I whacked the OS onto the 10GB drive. First time round it took 3 hours to install Windows Server 2003. So I browsed the net for a while and found out that the card was also a Dell CERT ATA 100, and Dell had newer firmware and drivers. So on a bit of a risk, I updated the card with the Dell firmware and installed Windows with the Dell drivers and it only took 20 mins this time round. I'm trying to copy the data back (from the O/B IDE) and its barely writing back at 1MB p/s, at this rate, its going to take close to 2 solid weeks to fill the hard drives. My question is, why is it so damn slow, is it... The crappy budget card Mixed hard drives Wrong stripe size (64KB) Too many logical drives The server is running 2 Athlon MP's @ 1.6GHz and 1GB ram. If it means having to buy new matched HDD's I don't mind, as long as it works!

The only difficulty is that I will never know whether they use the materials or not - I can't monitor the store, its in a different country altogether. I can request the copies back - but what if they don't send them?

I can prove that I filmed it (I have the equipment that encoded the tapes timestamps). But the difficulty is monitoring if the company is using the material or not without my consent - its almost impossible to say if they are using it or not.

Hi, I filmed an event recently and a company who participated wanted some footage. Under the assumption the company was going to pay in good faith (big mistake), I sent the materials (photographs and DV tape) to them, I also sourced some additional photographs for them and had to pay for them off another photographer. My dillemma is that they now say they don't want the photos + video, but its too late as far as I'm concerned because its not like they can return it (mainly because they will have just copied it and used it anyway). Does any know the laws on this, and how I can prosecute them, I plan on filing a small claims court order against them to collect the money, but I need to know the legalities on the issue before I bother. I don't really have a lawyer, but I will see if I can contact one for a bit of advise. In the mean time I was hoping you guys could be of assistance. There must be a sales of goods act for digital material which stipulates this. Help a friend out! Ben

Guys, wanted a list of things to backup (not how to do it - my server handles everything quite nicely).

I format my computer at least once every month, and I always plan to write an exhaustive list of what to backup, because I always forget something. But everytime it comes to a format, I forget stuff, so I'm going to format anyway for my new version of Vista (legally for £12). So I want you guys to add to the list, then I can save it, and always know what to backup. My Documents Bookmarks Saved Mozilla Passwords Desktop IE Favourites Fonts Thats all I can think of so far.

stick to the topic mate, i didn't say - "im looking for a new operating system - please boast about your favourite ones". i know you answered sensibly at the start, but dont deter (cos it just adds to the endless crap most forums are full of nowadays). im not going to discuss the practicality of vista, my cousin likes it, and it works for him, i was just seeing if anyone knew a workaround for aoe II, obviously not.

I get your point, but its not practical for me to use nix - I use that when I really have to, and we're talking about my cousins machine here, no-one wants to use nix as their daily if they've never used it before.

Ok, I googled it, found a way to disable IPv6 through the regsitry. And it did nothing. Still no joy :(

Running Vista because its seriosuly faster than XP for almost everything. I'm not strictcly sure on how to disable IPv6. I removed the additional network services from it for the network adaptor, but that just killed my net connection. And I stopped any associated services I could think of that were IPv6 - but still no joy.

Hi, I'm trying to play a game of AOE II with my cousin. His machine is running Vista and mine is dual booting Vista and XP MCE. Both are connected via a local LAN using a simple switch. Also, every firewall on each machine is as disabled as possible. If I am running XP and host the game, his computer can see the game but can't connect. But if his computer hosts the game, mine cannot see it full stop. If I run Vista, neither machine can see each other (in game). But file sharing etc. is fine between both machines, its just permissions for the gaming ports are nuts.

I used to have an ethernet cabling city at my last house, so now I'm trying to be a bit neater by using wireless - so running a patch lead between the router and AP is a non-option. I already considered this, but I really don't want to have to lay cable. I think I *may* have found some kind of fix, I reset both pieces of equipment, and set them both to pretty much the same settings, and the D-Link was now able to detect the Netgear network using its 'Site Survey' feature. I clicked the network, then hit connect, and now, as far as Netstumbler is concerned, there is only one Netgear network, and it is encrypted - wooo. Last time I couldn't detect the network through site survey, so I entered the mac manually - which is where the problem might have stemmed from. I don't really know how much of a job the repeater is doing, atm, I am sat between both of them (around 1m from each) and have a signal of about -40db, which isn't fantastic. I'm going to move around the house and record figures, then move the repeater nearer to see if it is actually doing anything. Thanks anyway mate.

Hi guys, I'm currently using a Netgear DG834GT as my ADSL Modem/Router, but because we're in a pretty big house, the signal is quite weak at certain points. I have a spare D-Link DWL-9000AP+ lying around, so I thought I would configure it as a repeater. There isn't much config to be done, just simply enter the Mac Address of the signal to be repeated, and thats it. So, I popped in the mac, and the access point dropped off the radar and no longer broadcasts its own SSID. So after only seeing my main Netgear network available, with roughly the same signal, I'm wondering whether the D-Link is actually repeating the signal. So I cracked open NetStumbler to see that there is two networks, both Netgear, but one being encrypted and one not being encrypted....as far as Windows is concerned, you can only see one network, the encrypted one. I've never used a repeater before, but is it normal for a repeater to repeat the signal unencrypted, then auth through the main router? If so, surely it poses a problem for information being repeated, as it is sent unencrypted... Ps. I'm using WPA-PSK for encryption.

Setting up the webpage is easy enough for me, but how do you spoof the server? I would need my computer to act as the gateway (of sorts) so that their web requests are directed through my webserver. I remember seeing an episode on this a while ago, but can't remember for the life of me how to do it.

Yeh, I wondered how touchy a subject it might be - I assumed from past posts on here I 'should' be alright asking. I've just found a free connection (well, unsecured) and I've d/l'ed Ethereal TCPDump and Advanced Port Scanner. It should give me a bit more of an insight as to how these things work. I don't think it will be as simple as someone having an authorised IP address and just spoofing it, but anything is worth a try. Can you believe they charged 8 Euros for 1 HOUR in the Hilton! And no, I'm not rich enough to stay in the Hilton AND pay for their WiFi

Hi guys, I used to be a member on here a while ago (before the forums went down). I am travelling in Germany at the moment (for the World Cup) and most of the hotels I have been staying in offer WiFi. BUT it is that stupid WiFi with the transparent proxies like T-Mobile-com or SwissCom, where you need to buy airtime to use it, otherwise all pages redirect back to their login page. Does anyone know any ways of getting round this so I can enjoy some free internet? I tried using a simple proxy but that didn't work. I'm tempted to use a HTTP/SSH tunnel, but I have no other computer to connect to on the other end. All ideas are welcome (short of telling me to pay for it :p)
