Simple, yet comforting

I just bought a msi wind and I'm about to install gentoo. I'm not really worried about compile time so I'll let you know how it goes.
You might want to take a look at the new Dell 10v that just came out. I've tested the keyboard and it's the best I've seen on a net book. plus you get the n card your looking for, bluetooth, GMA 950 and the 1gb limit is no longer an issue as it's using the new z270 atom and will now have a seperate ram slot.
just a suggestion.

Yeah but I've got some pretty particular hardware and I find things just run a little smoother, besides it's not like I'm reinstalling the os every 6 months.
I will say that windows has come a long way from where it used to be. And working in IT I'll never be able to completely remove it from my life.
That said I try to find every opportunity to use an OS other than windows.

And now the brand new lappy running Arch...
Also, @3vmike, there is a huge sense of irony that your WP bashes windows and yet you're running ubuntu...
Actually the core install is arch.... in fact all most everything is compiled from source, the only thing that isn't is the ubuntu studio theme cause i'm not that creative.
I just thought the WP was humorous.
and besides I HOPE you'll agree that to compare windows xp and ubuntu would be at the very least... inaccurate.
Anyway can't we all just get a long!!

Hey drOp what video card does that dell have in it?
Just wondering, cause I've been looking around myself and the system you've described is very close to what I'm looking for.
Thanks

I'm looking for the best hack for the DS Lite to run an snes emulator. Anyone have any experience with these newer slot 1 hacks?
Any recommendations? The last time I hacked my ds it was with the first generation and everything has changed.

So I've been working on getting my geektool setup just right. I think i've got almost everything I need.
OS Version
CPU usage
HD Capacity
Ethernet and Airport IP
Connected Wireless Network name
MacRumors rss feed
Current Itunes Track
And a neat little script that pulls weather info and displays in a small phrase like "Tomorrow is forecast to be nearly the same temperature as today."
I'm wondering if anyone else has any suggestions or cool idea for great geektool scripts.
If anyone needs any help with It I'd be glad to help!!

I have to say that when I open up my mac and people see the pineapple sticker and the trust your technolust sticker I get some weird reactions.
Mostly I get the question "what does jaseger mean?"
Almost like when my phone rings and my hak5 ringtones goes off. Though one time I was at an apple store and the phone rang and I got a thumbs up from someone across the room.
I'll never give it up. It's not about being different, it's about never being ashamed of the things that you enjoy.

Those are quite possibly some of the worst arguments against OSX I have ever read.
Why can't we all just get along. We're all browsing the same internet you know.

I don't think I have ever heard anything as well articulated than that moonlit.
IMHO if you want GOOD antivirus protection, you need to pay for it. If you will to have some protection, but not the most up to date definitions, than go the free route. If you don't care because you format your HD every 6 months than forget the AV shit.
But just remember, the best anti-virus software won't protect you against stupidity. watch what you download and torrent and for the love of god, use a web-based e-mail client like gmail.

The best thing about cons in the social aspect. Don't be afraid to meet people and ask what they're working on. I've met some of the coolest people I know that way.

Originally, yes the poll was supposed to be only for mac users, but our's is a party of inclusion and so everyone's opinions matter.
Tho I am wondering why this post should be deleted, seams like a valid poll to me.

Ok, so my friend and I were having a debate and I'd like to pose the question to all of you. iWork or Office?

One think I do like is having the invisishield on the macbook and being able to be a little more rough and tough with it having the ssd.
-
I've also heard that SSD's are made larger than their reported size to counteract this phenomenon.
Also, if your that paranoid about loosing your data, you should probably be backing it up.\
To be honest had I been purchasing this macbook I don't think I would get the SSD, I prefer the larger drive space, but I figure now that I have it I might as well get the most out of it I can.
-
Your missing one big point about SSDs, reliability. You drop that laptop and no physically damage is done to the SSD then your data will still be their. In the case of the hard drive, the shock could very well have killed it.
Is it worth the money, well I suppose that depends on what your data's worth.
On another note, hopefully Snow Leopard will bring lots of nice benefits to using things like SSDs.
They say that Snow Leopard will bring a lot of under the hood improvements. I can only hope that one of them is SSD optimization.
-
There isn't much added performance to using SSDs with any major operating system right now, according to Slashdot.
Even still, I doubt formatting would give you any major improvements,... it'd probably have more to do with OS optimization. But of course, I know nothing of this and am basing this on wild conjecture. Personally, at this point in time, I think the $600 you spent on the drive was a waste. For $500 less, you could have gotten a drive that's 2.5 times the capacity, and those are with Apple's insane BTO prices.
Especially considering in one or two years, that drive will probably be $500 cheaper..., blah. Just my opinion.
Well then I guess it's a good thing my Job purchased the MacBook for me ;-D

Whoa whoa whoa, why are you reformatting the drive?
Mac OS Extended (Journaled) is recommended.
I'm not necessarily, just trying to understand the tech similarities/differences and how to capitalize on the hardware I've been given.
I've got Winxp running with bootcamp and just thought about it as I was doing the install.
-
Thanks for the recomendations guys.
Is there any particular way I should format the drive when doing a fresh install... IE Journaled, Not Journaled. Anything like that?
-
Ok so, I've got a brand new Aluminum MacBook with their 128gb SSD and I'm wondering if there are any tips or tricks to maximize battery life or performace.
Anyone have any ideas?
I've been googling for a while now and haven't found anything.

If Nokia would release a 3g compatible version for AT&T I might actually switch from the Iphone. But until they do I'll be bound by the shackles of Apple :-(
