    This is the easy way:

If you don't mind being watched by Google you can turn on location services and have it show in your "location history", so you can go on your phone and see where you laptop has gone, however the laptop has to be on for this to function correctly (and it may be that Google monitors where your phone has gone anyway).

Use a SIM card in your laptop which would allow you to communicate with it over mobile services?

    This is the hard way:

I would suggest using a separate location piece inside the laptop that's external from the rest of the motherboard (assuming your laptop has space in there, I know most are very compact these days) which runs off of a little battery (most GPS units don't use much energy, but maybe as a backup connect it to the main power supply just in case, just for a slightly increased chance of it working). I say that because the thief may not disconnect the battery, in which case this solution will cover whether they do or don't (at least for a while, until the little battery dies). Maybe you could hook up a SIM card to it as well so it can broadcast it's position (assuming it's in service range).

Anyway, this is extremely complicated and has a low chance of working properly anyway - and not something you want to do for every laptop you have unless you're a professional with lots of important data on your laptop.

Neither of these solutions are guaranteed to work, but they could be fun to try and play around with.

Hey that didn't cross my mind about Google Location but yeah think I'll pass on their prying eyes ?

That's a good idea to about the separate tracking unit. Thanks for the ideas

  2. Hi everyone, got a question about any ideas of how to locate, a lost or stolen Laptop/Desktop.

    I see LoJack has something

    https://www.absolutelojack.com

But seems expensive and not guaranteed.

I guess you can set up Some kind of Remote login with GPS for location and maybe camera and mic.

Not sure how that lojack program works

But what be a good way so that it is always persistent after a reboot and not visible to the thief and you can connect back to it through a firewall.

I've seen programs like Darkcomet Metasploit Netcat.. Vnc isn't hidden

With Metasploit it seems to crash alot it's nice and fun to play with but not sure how reliable it would be same with NC

Do you guys use anything just in case your computer or laptop is stolen?
