  1. Hey Guys, nice episode on the FreeNAS setup! I've been using it for about 4 months now and I love it! Just a heads up for those of you that didn't know - the current stable release (.67) has a bug with the FTP feature - it doesn't only user login but I just got wind of a new .68 RC2 - you can get it here to upgrade your firmware (download the .img and use webGUI to apply update):

    Hope you're gettin better Darren!

PS - lets see some close ups of that torn up finger! =P

  2. Cooper: I disagree, I think you will get a boost in performance by utilizing multiple processors. By partitioning multiple virtual drives, you're still only making use of one processor, right? It has been proven that 3 processors at 1ghz a piece is faster then one processor at 3ghz (when it comes to rendering individual frames). So basically, I could have my three machines linked up, and have about a total of 10ghz of processing power for rendering individual frames, whereas my one 3ghz of processing power wouldn't be nearly as fast, whether or not I had multiple drives partioned/virtualized.

I think your concept is very interesting as well though. It almost sounds like a virtual RAID array (a physical RAID array could also help speed up the rendering process...heck, they should do a segment on putting together one!)

Either way, I agree that all these ideas would definitely make for an excellent episode!

    What do you think Hak5?

  3. Darren: I am familiar with Vegas. I've used Acid a lot for audio production for the last 8 years...I love it. I HIGHLY reccommend you check out the trial of Premiere Pro 2 that was recently released - maybe you'll buy it once you have the funds!

Hak5 Team: what I was really wondering is maybe you guys could seek out the open-source render-farm software solutions that are out there so you can build your own without needing the funds to do it. Look into it, especially if you've got extra machines laying around doing nothing! =)

As for the render farm: it is most suitable for Adobe AfterEffects and/or 3dmax. Not specifically exporting a final video that was just edited, just more for effects rendering and exporting from a special efx program like the two I just mentioned.

From my exprience the only thing that could use a render farm is heavy effect processing on DV footage. Things like noise reduction filters or unsharpen masks.

Yes, I agree. There is a long list of filters that I had in mind...more importantly the cinematic filters that I use that take HOURS on end to render. This is what I really want a render farm for...faster results!

Here are two links I've looked into...they are a good read and a good headstart on building a render-farm...FOR FREE:

How to Build a Render Farm

DrQueue: The Open Source Distributed Render Queue

Let me know if you dare to get your hands dirty with this! =)

ps - I still think a behind the scenes look of your setup would be sweet =)

pss- this posts poll looks like its getting promising results! =P

  4. I have seen tutorials on how to build a render farm in writing but I think it'd be even better if we could see the Hak5 team do what they do best by showing us how its done !

I am an avid video editor and would love to see something like this happen, because then I could finally build my own (the written tutorials are vague and I'm more of a visual learner) and it would drastically cut down my AfterEffects/Premiere rendering times in half! Darren: you can relate, right?

What do you think Hak5 and Haklings?

Also, maybe Hak5 could do a segment in an episode where they give us a behind the scenes look at their video editing system and/or what they use to edit with - Premiere? Avid? Final Cut Pro (yeah right!)?

From what I saw in Ep. 9, it looked like you had an awesome system to edit with and I'm VERY interested in seeing/hearing what the full specs of it are!

    Please reply Hak5! =)

    Thanks
