  1. Your best bet, before you go too crazy, it to just try it with a couple of routers.

    Also, calculating your distance to the router gets tricky: The building, what it's made of (and how much of that is between you and any one router), the time of day, the model of access point, all play into how strong the signal is, and how much noise there is.

    So, with all of those factors, it will be imperfect. And that's OK. Start small, learn, and then grow.

  2. When it comes to convenience vs. security, the door swings both ways. So the question becomes: Who are you defending against?

    If you're trying to secure yourself from active/targeted investigation from the NSA, the game is already over. They have the resources, tools, staff, budget, and power to largely do what they want with (near?) impunity.

    However: foreign hackers, corporations, and the NSA are largely going for broad un-targeted data collection. Encrypting files BEFORE they go to your cloud storage account prevents passive collection of your data without having to go to the extreme inconvenience of, say, having a fully disconnected machine with no off-site backup.
