  1. Looking for recommendations on eReaders. Color screen is not essential as i am mostly going to be using it to read PDFs. Preferably with WiFi and bigger the screen the better. Looking for something with the least amount of DRM nonsense on it (if applicable). Going to start searching on my own, just thought i'd get some opinions from some of you that may already have one or used a couple. Thanks in advance for any recommendations/help. =D

  2. What is your field of interest?

What skills or experience do you currently have?

Minimal knowledge/skills at hacking/pen-testing at the moment. Starting out is so ominous because everybody has a different idea of where to start out. Currently reading a "How Networks Work" book, Hacking for Dummies (to learn terminology, etc.), and a book on Backtrack 5 by someone who appears reputable. Also, picked up all last year's issues of 2600 and subscribed. I threw a new HDD & DVD/CD drive into an old gaming tower & hoping to use that as my "guinea pig" for experimenting in a safe non-harmful way. Any pointers, books, places to look, etc. Would be greatly appreciated.

p.s. As a sidenote, i took programming in high school (12 years ago). Learned on ANCIENT stuff though (basic, pascal, & got my feet wet briefly in C++). So, i have SOME concept of how programming works.

  3. It is OK asking for people recommendations but you do need to put some effort in yourself. Someone recommended the Church of Wifi tables and you asked for links, searching gets you the links without needing to ask. Similarly, asking what is the function of Hashcat, google that and you'll easily find their homepage and loads of information on what it is and how it works.

That's fair, i guess me asking is a symptom of lack of time to sift thru things on my own. I can't speak for everyone, but myself, i work 70 hours a week. So sometimes finding time to research things gets a bit hairy. =( I do appreciate everyone's input though. You're all very helpful. =)

  4. Thank you for the info. The reason for asking people like yourselves for information and suggestions is because when I want to get my car fixed I ask who my friends recommend instead of just opening the phonebook, and hoping the place I choose does a good job. I do use search engines, but it seems more logical to ask someone more knowledgeable for assistance first.

  5. I don't use google due to privacy concerns, and as I stated above, I wanted to get suggestions from people who already knew good places to go. This keeps me from sifting thru BS sites that offer crap or have sub-par lists. I do appreciate the link just the same. ;)

p.s. I do some of my posts thru friends' smartphones, so i don't always have the option/time to google/search things right away.

  6. Yes updating drivers is simple, but you need to "find" drivers for your interface. You will need to determin what kind of wireless chipset you are running and then download the appropriate driver for it in Linux, and then install it... It can be an EXTREME pain. I honestly would completely reccomend investing in a external USB Wifi card like a Alfa. Most likely your card will not be completely supported anyways so you wil need to pick up another to get injecting packets... I am assuming your wifi card sucks. It could be perfect for wireless auditing but I don't know what kind you have.

Currently running BT5R1 on an Aspire One 722. Oddly enough i've been able to connect just find with it using Ubuntu (the actual installed OS), but Backtrack seems to need me to DL the drivers?

So my follow-up would be, how do i DL the drivers for an OS i am running "live", but not actually installed on a system that seems to run fine in a different flavor of Linux?

p.s. As a sidenote. Ever since i've had Ubuntu installed i have a semi-transparent "Unsupported hardware" AMD box in the lower right that doesn't go away. Have asked on other forums how to get this to go away to no avail. =(

  7. If your wifi is built in run this and post results: lspci

If your wifi is a USB stick run this and post results: lsusb

To see if if the interface shows up: iwconfig

    "

    lsusb:

Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

Bus 002 Device 002: ID 0402:7675 Ali Corp.

Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

Bus 001 Device 002: ID 13fe:3800 Kingston Technology Company Inc.

Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub"

    "iwconfig:

    lo: no wireless extensions

    eht0: no wireless extensions"

  8. So trying to run airmon-ng on my newly working live USB (BT5R1). But Interface, Chipset, & Driver show nothing. Confused as to why it's not being seen/read. Keep in mind i'm rather new to BackTrack & it's tools, so be gentle.
