  1. Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could recommend preferably an open source realtime sync program. I don't mind paying a few bucks if I have must to get the job done. I have two 4TB BlackArmor 440s each setup in a RAID5 on the same network. NAS-a is the main storage device for the network. Nas-b is used to keep a second copy incase NAS-a craps out on me. Currently I am using robocopy with the mir switch to reflect the changes of A to B. The problem I have with this is that robocopy usually takes the entire day to sync because there are too many files to compare changes to with the mir switch on. It usually sits for about 2 or 3 hours before it starts doing anything.

Does anybody know of a better option that can do realtime or close to realtime syncing? The BlackArmor devices have an rsync option with NAS to NAS. Unfortunately, Seagate forgot to mention in their documentation that this is not really a sync. It just creates a hidden backup on the second NAS device. You then have to restore the data back to another NAS in order to access it.

I found out that with the latest firmware update that you can setup iscsi targets on the NAS. Would it be a good idea to create a software mirror with the two iscsi targets using a Windows 7 or Windows Server box?

    Thanks,

    Chris

  2. I use BackupPC ( http://backuppc.sourceforge.net/ ) ,for backing up my only windows box, if your going to use anther box, BackupPC has a lot of nice features.

Not sure what the requirements are for your needs but simple scripts will do any backup and just run a scheduler.

Using perl in windows for a backup script will give you a ton of functionality.

Thanks, I like the web interface on this one. I am not sure if it allows for a Windows server to backup though. Their website only mentions PCs.

Does anyone have experience using the free crashplan.com? It looks like a pretty straight forward program and easy to use. I think you can even do free offsite backup to one of your own computers. Has anyone here tried it or have an opinion on it?

    Thanks,

    Chris

  3. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a free backup software that would work for Windows Server 2003. I don't really care for NTBackup. I have tried using Comodo Backup but can't seem to get the hang of it. Ideally, I would like something similar to the Windows Server 2008 backup, Windows Server Backup - WBAdmin. Appreciate any feedback.

    Thanks,

    Chris

  4. Something you can consider once you figure out who it is.

How do I block LogMeIn so my employees can't use it?

If you would like to prevent your employees from installing LogMeIn on their work computer, you should block secure.logmein.com on your firewall(s).

If you are on a Windows Domain, you may also install our Group Policy Object, which will allow you to limit access throughout your entire domain, without the need for firewall rules. Please see the link below for more information regarding our Group Policy Object.

How do I install the LogMeIn Active Directory Group Policy template (logmein.adm)?

  5. Logmein Pro has a feature that allows you to share file(s) by sending a secure link to the file through email. I know that the connection that LMI uses is secure, but how secure is the method of emailing a link to the file? Can't someone just sniff the link that is emailed to you? This would give them direct access to your "secure link".

I guess this question also relates to when you need to reset your password for an online account and they email you a link to reset your password.

    Appreciate any feedback.

    Chris
