  1. Ok so we can run linux on the Z2.

We can add a serial port to it.

    http://www.notanon.com/zipit/adding-a-seri...ter/2010/06/24/

From what I can see you can use the serial port to access the Z2,

but can we use the serial port and run minicom on the Z2 so that we could say configure switches and routers via the Z2. It would beat carrying a laptop round!

I know I could get a netbook and use that, but this would be way cheaper, lighter and I can't find any netbooks with serial ports so would have to get a USB to Serial adapter as well.

  2. Heh ;) that wouldn't be the first time I've seen that.

Can't help with US suppliers I'm afraid, but do a quick search on Google, also make sure you are familiar with the terms of an OEM license.

You just need to inform your customer of the pro's and con's, e.g. if they can't turn up license, then they could run the risk of running without service packs, also if Microsoft did ever audit them they could be in for huge fines (I believe Microsoft goes after a % of revenue backed dated for the history of the product). But I do not know of any companies that have ever been audited.

You'll also need to consider the risk to your business; any Certifications (at least Microsoft based) could be stripped (in the above dooms day scenario)

be careful of appearing to "scaremonger" your client, they might just think your trying to sting them for money.

  3. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone not fully capable of researching and fixing their own problems either, it can be a little picky and there's no telling if and when Apple might decide to kill OSx86.

what ever you say about macroshaft, the win32 api has been around for ages and they did actually make a lot of effort to keep stuff working between OS transitions. rather than apple which just killed they're os twice.

  4. Well because of the price of mac OSX 10.6 I thought that my Asus 1000he was looking like a good candidate to turn into a hackintosh. I was wondering whether I should install it alongside my current duelboot of XP and Ubunto.

But before i do i really don't see some of the benefits since im running with ubunto the only thing that really appeals to me is that the mac pretty OS. Ive done some research and of course ubunto 9.10 outperforms Mac OSX 10.6 in most areas. I was just wondering is there any reason why i should get Mac OSX ?

    your thoughts/ opinions ?

the only reason I tried running a hackintosh recently ( actually a vm ) was so i could have a look at some mac only software:

    logic.

and because someone appears to have made an emulator for the Digidesign hardware so you can run pro-tools without the hardware, ( I was interested in how it works, - I already own an MBox)

tbh, ardour and jack on ubuntu excite me more logic, (but I digress, this is your mac thread ;) )

  5. Most people who are volume licensed get a login to Microsoft website, so you don't need the media you just download the ISO.

And OEMs generally don't provide media any more, but they can and a lot do, provide an "image" of the windows installation. On DVD and some automated mechanism to restore the machine. so the user doesn't have to do

<FavouriteImageProgram> tack tack restore my os

Which imo is better for the end user, because they don't have to actually sit through a windoze install and then find loads of drivers etc. and because the image and process is built for that machine its going to work, unless of course theres a hardware failure.

Some el cheapo metal badge maker, who throws a £10 case/PSU in with a £15 motherboard probably doesn't do this, but i think in this situation you have more to worry about than no windoze cd.

If you want to resell boxed product or Volume licensing to them, you would probably be better going through a reseller yourself and tacking a nominal fee for administration. I doubt they will deal directly with you for one customer. anyway with out the quantity of business you are not going to be competitive.
