  1. Hi all,

I have just got an Xbox360 and set it up as an extender to my Windows7 media centre, which got me to thinking about virtualizing the media centre onto my ESXi 3.5 server and using the Xbox to access it.

Does anyone know if you can put a PCIx TV tuner card into a ESXi box and make it visible to a VM? the card in question is a Black Gold BGT3540 6 in 1 tuner.

    Thanks

  2. Morning all, after some browsing round the net I thought I would try and find out what others are using/recommending:

I am looking for a VMware appliance or software to move my network firewalling to my VMware ESXi server. I would also like to have a look and play with IDS so if it includes that level of functionality, great. So far I have tried m0n0wall, untangle and smoothwall. I like smoothwall but the IDS seems to be broken in the latest version as snort have made some changes and smoothwall has yet to catch up. I am not a linux guy and unfortunately don't have much time to start hacking it to make it work.

So if you use firewall software on your ESXi server what do you use and why, if not any recommendations?

    Thanks

    Ryan

  3. Not technically a whitebox machine but here is my actual ESX3i server spec's, it lives in my lounge and runs quiet as hell (my media centre is louder!), it came in about £1200:-

    Dell PowerEdge T100 tower server:

    Quad Core Intel Xeon X3360 @ 2.83GHz

    8Gb DDR2 800Mhz ram

    SAS6iR raid card

    2x 750Gb 7.2K hard drives (RAID 1)

Intel PRO 1000PT Dual Port Server Adapter

I used a 2G USB stick to run ESX3i, although I extracted the image from the ISO and wrote it to the stick on my laptop and then transfered it to the machine instead of installing from the CD. I use this as an environment to test stuff for work during the evenings and weekends.
