  1. Here's what I'm thinking of doing:

I picked up a wrt54G router cheap and plan on getting dd-wrt set up on it. Is there a way I can keep my existing DLink router but Use the 54G as a VPN to my home network?

    Small diagram:

    Intenet ---> Dlink--->Linksys----VPN---->Server

Something tells me the way I'm looking at the setup isn't right.

  2. I'm still wrapping my head around how the vpn would work, but maybe one of you could help me out.

After setting up the vpn to accept incoming connections for the pc I'll be connecting to, I then set up the vpn client on my laptop which I'll be using to connect to the server from my school's campus.

After establishing the vpn connection, what IP am I using to open the RDP connection? If I use the DynDNS address will it still go through the vpn? Essentially with the vpn connected, does that mean even internet traffic is tunnelled through the vpn?

I'm a bit confused as to how it all works. Any help is appreciated. thanks.

  3. To keep things simple heres what I have and what I'm looking to do:

Home server set up for some stock/foreign exchange trading. Have already set up dyndns and remote desktop connection establishes fine.

I'd like to secure the connection so that nothing can be seen going back and forth. Is it necessary to do this? Also, I'd like to change the port that RDP is running on for the whole security through obscurity thing, where can I do this? Thanks for the help.

  4. Here's a crazy idea :P

Is it possible to wire this from the line out port for sound? When I want the fan on, I play a sound. Stop the sound and the fan is off? Could it work like this as current is flowing providing sound to a speaker however instead of a speaker it will be a fan?

  5. there an option, but for the amount of programming / soldiering / price need to install one just to handle a fan, it isnt quite worth it.

Have you checked on the motherboard for parrallel connection? Another viable option would be a simple circute using a thermal resister, so the fans will be off untill the temp hits a certant point.

Yeah there's no parallel port. I've used parallel before but this computer doesn't have it. What's that highly non-worth it option? I might be willing to give it a try :P

  6. USB controllers are rather hard to make with little to no experience, but there is an easier way, wire the fan to power from the 5v USB line, but then run a transister of the parrallel port. You will then be able to activate the pin on the parrallel and make the fan turn on / off.

Unfortunately no parallel output ports on the computer its being set up for :(. I've used parallel before and I considered it but after realizing there wasn't a parallel port, I was SOL :P.

Are arduino boards something to consider? I've heard about them but know little to nothing about controllers :(.

  7. I'm currently working on setting up a server with mild issues of heat (homebuilt beaty). I've wired up a fan to run off one usb port but since I will be using the server without a screen, it is mostly a remote-desktop machine. I would like to have the ability to enable and disable THAT SPECIFIC USB PORT at a time at which I choose, whether enabling a scheduled item or running a batch script.

Any ideas on how to do this?

Thanks. (WinXP PRO- Don't hate I need the simplicity in moments of crisis)

  8. There are currently open drivers in the works. Not sure how far it goes as I've been trying to get shit working myself. As far as I know the n810 wifi adapter in there doesn't natively support packet injection.

I have an alfa 500mW which I know does with so my challenge right now is figuring out how the open drivers intall and work, then getting it all hooked up and seeing if an external usb adapter will work to connect to aps/ do some fun stuff.

If anything new comes up I'll keep you posted but last I saw its still in dev.

  9. Oh, I guess you didn't hear, due the the economic crisis, Santa had to lay off 90% of his elf force and is forced to give out mass produced lead covered dollar store toys from china.

Well that last 10% of elves better make me a 100% Rebel XSi or I'll be a good 110% unhappy this year :)

  10. Netbook/UMPC, so either something like an AAO/EEE or perhaps N810/iPod Touch

I have the n810 :) but apparently nokia is coming out with the n97...which is what the n810 SHOULD have been.

What about a bluetooth laser keyboard ;) its pretty 1337 check out thinkgeek i just saw it today :P i might get myself one just for the hell of it looking sweet :P

  11. Thanks Guys! Now I think I will stick with the EEE....

You won't be dissapointed :) There's also the eeeuser forums which are GREAT for help with any issues and more people that asked questions about each model. I'd check there to clear up any questions you might have too so that you get the model which you'll enjoy the most.

  12. Hey guys, I have a question.

I am thinking of getting a netbook. I like the EEEPC but then again, there is the Aspire. I am more into the Aspire, but I couldn't find it anywhere if it has an Atheros chipset or can support injection out of the box hardware.

    Which would you recommend?

    Thanks

I'm an EEEPc 901 user and personally, I wouldn't switch over and buy an acer. I know acers have the better specs depending on the model but my 901 has some mods I use a lot i.e. touchscreen, internal 3g etc. The wifi that I use is Alfa wireless usb but getting an atheros wifi card and swapping the one in the eeepc already would only cost ~$30. I'm perfectly content with my eee! :)

  13. Thats it, i give up on hak.5

Ive been here watching since the first episode.

Ive stayed even tho the episodes have gotten worse.

Now i see the pedo bear in the background... asif its cool....

If you think its fun to advertise the molestation of children, thats great, just dont expect me to watch you any more.

youve been watching since season 1 and are just joining the forums?... Joined: Today, 08:25 AM

they also drink alcohol, guess that means they support drunk driving.

Exactly what guy up there said ^^. Why join the forums...to say you're not going to watch anymore? Learn to move on in life, not everything works the way you want it to. bi bi =)

  14. I'm a 901 owner and although the stock wifi card doesn't support any "wifi fun" if you know what I mean, I just got myself an alfa 500mW usb adapter and its set to go. Remote exploit forums have a good tutorial on BT3 working on the 901 too. Love the little thing :)

  15. Fail, I have a Agenda VR3 (got it free), a modded LaFonera with a serial port (free) and a GSM modem (free), you could put that set up together for under $100. Ghetto hacking device ftw.

LOL to make myself feel better I actually ended up getting both for $350. But what the heck I'm up for the fun of it, hobbies need some investment at some point. Hopefully one day the innovation part of my mind will kick in rather than the half-ass 'I'll just do what I know will work' part.

  16. I have a Nokia N810 and an EEEPC 901. Both are nice but might not be what you're looking for (again n810 is good for a linux savvy person and eeepc well... you dont want the netbook style). I'd suggest looking at Aigo for a few devices they have that might interest you. Check out jkkmobile's channel on youtube there's some great reviews and devices/mods that he tries out. Should give you an idea of whats out there.

Any questions on what I've got just send a message and I'll answer them for you.

  17. As I said, depending on your needs and goals you'll have to chose what is possible for you. Do you want to go low or high level? Want to get something done quick and dirty or rather have a complete program ?

To be completely honest, I want to try automating the control of a computer first. Automatically changing settings, small pranks that can be loaded on startup etc etc for some fun to start out. The main thing that caught my eye in the switchblade (usb hack) was making that U3 partition different by scripting it to DO something automatically. ThAts the kind of thing that interested me and I don't want to just leech the code and use it and thats it. I want to be able to write my own and customize it to what I like.

If I were to want to do something like that (in this case lets say write my own code for the U3 partition to automate when plugged in) what language should I consider learning? I think that's where I'd find my interest lies at the moment. After which I can go into some application coding which I've already done with java and a tiny bit of c++.

    Thanks!

  18. Alright so I was talking to someone at my University, topic came up about programming languages that are worth learning. I've already started learning C++ and am familiar with java HOWEVER what purpose do these languages have for me?

The question arose of application languages and scripting languages. What's the difference? There was mention of Perl and Python with scripting languages and c++ in application languages. I only have a vague idea of the difference, but what really is the difference? I'd really like to dedicate my time and learn something worthwhile and feel controlling the computer through programming is a better start than going into applications first.

What would one suggest? I don't neccessarily want a 'beginner' language as I've done some programming before. What opinions do you have? I hear python, perl, and c++ a lot but really, what should I spend my time trying to learn? Thanks a bunch!
