  1. No one really has a career in computing, they just do it as their job.

I would disagree with that. There is a big difference between IT support and Computer Science. In the former, you help people figure out why their mouse won't work (they accidentally kicked out the plug). In the later, you study the fundamental computational theory that dictates the way problems are solved. Tell the guys who develop chips for Intel or create the processing algorithms for the LHC that they don't have real careers.

Either way, you should go to college. I have friends that were in my PhD program that talk about going back. More education = More opportunity.

  2. Right I am still getting "unable to connect" even though im sure the flashing process has completed.

After I do the flash and its succesful should Freifunk come back with done or finished or something? I've waited a few hours for flashing to complete. When I power cycle (to re-attempt connection) the WLAN is not coming up.

Ive tried virtually every timeing variation I can think of. What is the exact window for telnet access?

You will not get a message that the flash is complete. After about 20 minutes it is, however. It sounds like you are at that point.

Now connect the FON to the laptop using the Ethernet cable (NOT wifi). Unplug and re-plug the FON. Quickly initiate the Telnet session from your laptop. If it does not connect try again immediately, the router just might not have been done booting. Now change the password over Telnet (this will re-enable SSH).

As I said in an earlier post, the FON will not appear to be booting normally anymore, it is fine though.

    Good Luck

  3. what problems are you having and on what page (give url). I'll have a look at it.

The buttons do not behave properly. For example, the button to turn Karma on and off, as well as the status messages. No matter how many times you click, the page will not indicate that Karma is off. In addition, the Jasager admin page seems to time out and run sluggishly in IE, likely due to the usage of Javascript (which IE is not the fastest with).

Overall it is a nice front end. I appreciate the effort you went through. It makes running Karma, something I have been doing lately anyway, a bit easier.

    Thanks,

    James

  4. I will try out what you suggested James and let you know what happens. The port on the FON must be autosensing if you dont require a crossover (why the hell did they suggest this in the readme??).

Anyway I cant wait to play with this.....

The readme you read dictated a slightly different procedure (if it was the same one I saw). Darren's instructions include switching the FON port from WAN to LAN, removing the need to "trick" it with a cross over cable. Feel free to hit me with an email if you are still having trouble, I'll try to walk you through it.

Even if you get bored with Jasager, the FON makes a nice little travel router. It is worth the time to unlock it properly.

    Cheers,

    James

  5. @ SmoothCriminal

The point is that FON is a community network and like any community network it stands or falls with the use of its community members.

Any one that gets a (cheap) Fon router is suppose to share its internet connection with the other Fon users/owners.

Bud when you are just getting a FON router because its cheap and its nice that you can use the internet connection of the Fon users/owners that are sharing there internet connection with out sharing it your self.

    Thats wrong.

And the FON community is not happy with those people because there are the back stepping group that give the FON community a bad name and will get the Community to fall down instead of letting it grow.

The point is if your not willing or able to share your internet connection with other FON users/owners you shut not get your self a Fon router.

    Gerard

(by the way i contacted the FON head office and they will get back to me)

I think you are missing the fundamental flaw in your argument.

FON's business model is the following:

They sell routers (at a completely unsubsidized price) to consumers. The consumer uses this as a router in their own home. If the consumer creates an account, and agrees to the terms and conditions, the router is configured automatically to have a private and public side. In return for sharing their home connection, the consumer is given access to the public side of other FON routers. Consumers who do not wish to share their home connection, or do not purchase a FON router, may still purchase usage rights to the FON public network for $3 per day.

Simply put, the FON business model is to sell routers. This is very different from the subsidization of a cell phone, for example, where the hardware is sold under cost in order to sell services. This is the reason FON does not force consumers to agree to terms of service upon purchase, only activation.

In addition, Comcast, Verizon, Rogers, and most other North American telecoms specifically prohibit such sharing of WiFi. In the United States it is, in fact, illegal to share Wifi without a license. In this case, I think you would agree that by FON selling routers to Americans, they are not encouraging illegal activity.

In short, if you paid for it, it belongs to you. If you disagree, we would all love to see a clear, concise, and cogent rebuttal, well thought out and in proper Queen's English. There is no greater pursuit than intelligent discourse, please do not waste the opportunity with thinly veiled threats and inconsistent accusations.

    Cheers,

    James

  6. Just found this in the Readme for Freifunk.

    [Windows]

    1) Connect the Fonera to the ethernet jack. Use a cross linked cable.

    2) Browse to http://winpcap.org/ , download the installer and install it.

    3) Download http://download.berlin.freifunk.net/fonera...-gui-1.0-42.exe

    4) Run the program. Select interface. Click Go. Switch on the Fonera.

I believe this answers my first question but I need confirmation from someone more experienced with the flashing process for this technique.

WINCAP is only necisary in order to get the libraries the flasher gui requires. As long as the flasher will start, don't sweat it.

Use a regular cable, see my post above.

  7. First of all thanks to the guys who make this site what it is.

Right.....got a few newbie problems.......so hopefully I havn't just screwed up my fon as they retail for $44 where I currently live (UK).

I have worked my way through the guide exactly as printed except I made the mistake of connecting the unit to the internet and requiring a firmware downgrade. Currently, I have made it to the Firmware flashing stage with Freifunk.

I have the fon connected to my switch via 10/100 Ethernet (no wifi) back to my pc.

    My pc has these settings:

    IP: 192.168.0.252

    MASK: 255.255.255.0

Now I have tried the flash three times (minimum of 50 minutes) but the telnet access is not coming back up. I am receiving no errors in Freifunk GUI and wireless now seems to be disabled (so i presume its flashing).

The fon when it comes out the box uses dhcp so im not sure if flashing openWRT assigns the FON nic a static 192.168.1.1 (the address im trying to telnet to).

    So two questions:

What the hell have I done wrong here and why? (ANY help would be very appreciated)

Is my FON now useless and beyond repair?

If you are following the guide Darren put together, connect straight from the FON RJ-45 jack to your computer's NIC card. You do not need to use a crossover cable (in fact you shouldn't), as the steps up to this point have switched the FON port from an WAN to LAN.

You FON is now operating similar to a standard router with the WAN port removed, connect to is normally.

ALSO, when you bring the router back up after the Kernal patch (right before the Telnet step), you will not see the WLAN LED light up. This is normal, as the router is not fully booting.

Make sure you make your make your telnet connection quickly as there is a window of opportunity while the router is listening on port 23. If you miss the window the connection will be refused, simply cycle power to the router and try again.

If these notes are obvious, this post was not for you. I hope this helps anyone having trouble.
