FON Router disguised as a lamp.

Recommended Posts

I was thinking about how funny it would look having a power cable running from a wall outlet into a pineapple, and then thought, wouldn't it be just as subtle to buy a bland but tasteful lamp, which has a relatively big base (maybe one of those porcelain ones with big round stands) and put the FON router within it, so the lamp can be switched on and off, but the FON router gets permanent power from within the lamp's frame.

Just an excuse to use a powerpoint. If the FON battery life is very very high then it probably wouldnt matter.

But a lamp with a FON router within it, could also be a nice house warming present for an non-suspecting host ^_^

I think it really depends on what you will be using it for.

Out doors (i.e. parks, courtyards):

1. A solar powered bag!

2. Since magnets are less likely to interfere with the workings of a router you can attach it to something metal.

3. This isn't very practical but on an rc car would be funny.

In Doors (i.e. coffee shops):

1. Power supplies to a laptop. Some power supplies I’ve seen are huge and could easily fit a gutted router.

2. Inside of a battery compartment, say a MacBook battery slot. Then power the router with a battery and your laptop with the power cord.

3. Inside roof tiles, like in the bathrooms.

4. Inside a portable HHD, like this one, seagate. Then power it threw usb, if possible, and wire the antenna internally.

There are a lot of places to hide a router in public places. The problems that you are most likely to occur are, power, signal, and the amount of users you "snag".

What about a garden lamp which is solar powered?

sol4141qr3.jpg

Doesn't leave much space for the router...perhaps you can put it underground?

The base can make a nice antenna .... and coupling this with rechargeable batteries would be nice. ;)

Not sure how you'll connect your pc though.. perhaps you can do it wireless-ly at the same time?

WOW! lol awesome idea. If i had a fon i would totally do that. very inconspicuous and great for suburban areas.

Unfortunately, the fonera requires 5V*2A which is way more than a crappy solar powered lamp can produce.

True, however you can place a backup battery inside the light housing and use what little energy to give them a "semi" charge; with the current cells on these lamps i doubt it will do anything.

OR

You can replace the cells with a larger or more powerful one. Im sure if you googled it something would show up. But i doubt that solar energy alone will power it on the scale of a solar lamp, but i am pretty sure that solar bags will do the trick.

Yeah I agree with SmoothCriminal, Walking around with a lamp just seems odd! how many people do you know that carry lamps around with them? As if your computer actually needed light(it already gives off light) and most coffee shops already have lighting, so then it would really seem awkward with you holding a lamp when there's already enough light! People would know somethings up for sure!

With a pineapple it definitely just looks like you bought some fruit and can't wait to eat it ;) I love pineapples

the best way to go is probably just a rechargeable battery and you just always keep it charged.

I'm thinking about a more long-term set up, in a relatively public place. a lobby of a hotel or something for instance. You could easily bring the lamp in and set it up without anyone really noticing or caring.

And it could stay there for ages, maybe years.

Just have to get it there without being noticed first.

In a coffee lounge that could be a bit problematic...

I rekon I could do it. Couldnt be impossible as long as the lamp is small enough to hide in a bag or under a coat hung over your arm or something.

EDIT: putting a Fon router within a laptop would be really awsome.

The whole pineapple idea is pretty creative.

I wouldn't go out of my way to hide it if out in public, like snakey says, tell them to mind their own business.

I don't see why a random would just come up to you and ask what it is anyway.

... i find it hard to believe that no one has just said, put it in your backpack. Who is going to question you, if your in a coffee shop with a backpack? if you want to stash it, go into a the toilets, if its a floating floor, up she goes, otherwise wrap her in a few condoms, and sink her in the toilet head. Otherwise go bond style and up in an air vent she flies.

I have seen people bring beading lamps with huge bases to coffee shops and make jewelry so why not a lamp yeah its odd but it keeps people away

Well its only odd the first time you do it. Then its there to stay.

Assuming you choose a relatively commercial coffee store, where the employees won't know/care about a random lamp being on one of the tables. They're not payed to think about things like that lol.
