Computer slowed randomly

Recommended Posts

Recently, my computer randomly just started booting and running INCREDIBLY slow. The boot time, which used to be about a minute, minute and a half, is up to about 5-10 minutes. This is a fairly new system and it was not gradual, this hit a day or two ago and hit hard. It seems like its something trying to start-up in my opinion but can't figure it out. I have unplugged any extra hard drives, CD/DVD Drives, and other peripherrals. Please let me know what you guys need to help me with this!

Here is my HijackThis Log if it helps anyone.

I think the software your refering to is space monger... I used that before and its pretty cool... say you've got tons of space taken up on your hard drive and you want to clear some off to keep space usage down... I know sometimes its really hard to find whats taking up all the space!! so just use space monger and it graphically shows you what's taking up the biggest space so you can decide if you don't need it to just delete it, or backup elsewhere...

As for your speed issue, I know tons of programs like to make themselves start up with the computer, which is gay... lots of programs all trying to start up at the same time is obviously going to slow down the start up quite a bit!

I like to keep almost no start up programs by removing the entries to the registry key's that hold startup progam data

also the start menu has a folder called startup which can have processes to start in there too...

Remove everything pretty much except essentials, for example in my startup I only have my graphics card's program, apache web server, and the basic windows services (minus messenger and ones described below) thats all, makes a nice fast startup...

also another reason why a computer can start up slow and you'll notice the start menu+taskbar are not accessible for a while when starting up windows, this is caused by the "SSDP Discovery Service", which enables support for Universal Plug and Play Devices

it basically trys to find UPnP devices on startup slowing everything down, if you don't need that then set it to disabled in services through administrative tools

also since your disabling that you might as well disable "Universal Plug and Play Device Host" as well because it depends on the "SSDP Discovery Service"

Also how much ram do you have that goes into play as well...

I have 4 gigs and sometimes it doesn't even seem like enough! lol I can't wait until computers have 100 gigs of ram! :)

tons and tons of ram + fast processor ===== FAST COMPUTER (unless running vista lol so vista is a no-no!)

If your computer is still slow, maybe a good ol' reformat will fix it? it always does it for me!

Ok, go into MyComputer. Right click on each hard drive and uncheck indexing service. Takes a while to complete.

Then, click windows key+ R (Run Prompt) and type services.msc

Go down to "Indexing Service" and stop it, and change it from automatic to DISABLED. Also, disable "Messenger" under the services as well. This is not MSN Messenger by the way, and is a service you don't need unless your on a shared network where you need to send alerts to other users or receive them via network services.

Disabling the indexing service and unchecking it for each HDD will increase your speed dramatically. Also, unless you need Microsoft Office, uninstall it. Or, go in and disable Ctfmon and Mdm through Office install/Uninstall/Repair under the control panel. There are links on Microsoft.com that walk you through how to disable ctfmon and mdm, as they are unessential to make MS Office work, and only SLOW down the pc. Office will work without these programs, but they are installed and set to run by default from a new Office installation.

Start with these small changed, then reboot and you might even want to shut down all anti-virus and spyware software and do a defrag first, even if the pc is fairly new and just built, you would be surprised how much this will help after disabling all these other things. Be sure to reenable the firewall/antvirus/spy-adaware programs after the defrag ;) but most things like Ad-aware don't need to run all the time, and can be left to start only when you want to do a scan. Same with most spyware programs. Antivirus and Firewall software should keep you fairly safe and I would only do adaware and spyware scans after downloading something or installing a new program.

Also, not sure if you need the fdm.exe (Free Download Manager) and Adobe's mDNSResponder.exe running at all times, but they shouldn't eat up too much to make you slow down.
