cooper
If you know somones IP in another city is it possible to hack them? The one thing MUST have in order to hack someone using the internet is their IP. Not having their IP is equivalent to trying to call that girl you met in that bar 2 days ago but never got her number, and you only remember her name starts with a 'J'. Once you have the IP, you can do anything you want. The level of success you get from it depends on how good you are at hacking, and how good your target was at tightening his or her box. Where that box is in relation to yours will only become an issue once you've been caught and they're trying to figure out which government institution should be used to investigate you. Obligatory Hackers quite (verbatim. Too lazy to actually look it up): So I'm throwing commands at it. I don't know where it is or what it does. So I finally figure out that it's a bank... Okay, so wait wait wait, it's a bank. So the next morning I open up the paper and it turns out some cash register in, like, bumsville, Idaho spit out 1200 dollars into the street! - That's kinda cool. That was ME! I did that. - And you did this from your house? [nods head] - What, are you stoned or stupid? You don't hack a bank across state lines, you get nailed by the feds! Where's your brain, in your ass?!? [looks shocked] - That's majorly stupid, dude.

comcipher
I think there should be a thread with links to resources for newbies that want to learn all about computers, networking, and security. Could be very stickyable. I went ahead and started one, i'll do my best to keep it up to date as people contribute to it. http://hak5.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=

G0053
if you are still reading this thread. It depends if it is a static ip or not. the difference you ask is that a static ip is pernamnt and the other is not. so if you are on a dial up connection the ip will change every time they log on. from there you can use a live cd called BackTrack from there you can user your tools like nmap and neusses[/url]

Knowing there IP address (static or other wise) does not nessaserily make them 'hackable', I would like you to try to hack me if you dare, my IP is 207.46.198.30 and it's static. Maybe we should pressure VaKo or someone else with sufficient rights to post your actual IP. Garda
Nah guys, hack this ip 12.110.110.204 the owners probably have crappy firewalls and i'm sure that they won't do anything nasty to you...
cooper
AT&T owns everything starting with 12. Quite shocking to see what HUGE address space some companies take. Anyways, try hacking this one: 127.13.9.11 At least with these guys you stand a chance of succeeding and it would even be legal to do it. If i notice it gets posted, I can easily change it... but i'm not scared of been posted any way. Many script kiddies have failed trying to brake into my server, all my other computers are behind a secondary hardware firewall.
VaKo
May well be dynamic but its been the same your last 246 posts though... Only way i've found with NTL to force a different IP address is turn off the cable modem for half an hour or so, then renew it. How does it work from the EU POV on BT ADSL? When I was working there I had logins to a IP range session killer, that was fun...
Sparda
Actualy i'm not sure how to change my IP address... I asumed i could just disconnect it then reconnect it and it would change... havn't had the need to actualy change it manuly in years. Still... even with a unobviuse and practical method of changing my IP address I still do not fare IP address postage since I post it publicly all over the place any way. I'll give you a clue... http://sparda.hopto.org/
VaKo
Depends on the lease time on the IP is i suppose, if you leave it off for long enough your router won't renew it and then hopefully someone else will be assigned it. With my NTL one it changes randomly, usually after its cut out for 20mins in the early morning. But I know if you ring up BT complaining your firewall is getting a lot of crap you can have it changed, but its something wholesale do apparently... which can take fucking months to be dealt with.
