comcipher
Skype ( www.skype.com ) is offering free Skype out calls to landline and mobile phones in the US and Canada. Just download the Skype client, create a free account, then start calling! This offer is through the end of the year, at which point they'll decide what they want to do. http://share.skype.com/sites/en/2006/05/fr...ndlines_an.html

spektormax
well 1 most skype custemers got the email, and I tried ti on a few calls, the quailty is nice, and it is a little glichy asking you for money occasionly. BUt im curious, what is skype thinking? Like, how can this help them. Is it liek Drug dealers wehre they give you a free sample and then you get adicted and then you have to pay for it. BEcause, I can see why if you have 6m ounths to get used to doign free cals online liek this you might want to conitue. THe onyl down side, is that yur number is 10000123456 which makes peopel go HUH
Darren Kitchen
Yes, it's like the drug dealer thing. Soon enough you'll want a skype cordless handset. Oh look, they can be had inexpensively at radio shack and best buy now. Great, a spiffy new SIP phone. Wait... It's not a SIP phone? Skype isnt using open standards? Thats ok, I've got a shiney new phone and all my friends have my new number and I just ditched verizon for skype because I'm so so happy. [January 1 2007] What? Pay for calls! But! But!... I've already invested all that money in the sweet little skype handset and all my friends have my new number. No thanks, I'll be sticking with Gizmo Project for my VOIP to PSTN calls. $10 gets like a bizillion minutes (which is just about free), its got a built in recording feature, and doesnt sound like ass. PS: Skype, don't get me wrong baby, your still fiine and your great at parties, but I'm stickin with gizmo.
spektormax
couldn't have said it better my self, but my friend and I tried gismo cuz we wanted to use the handy dandy record for a podcast we are startign this summer, but we couldnt get a voice connection goign no matter how hard we tired. ANd it didnt say anyhtign was wrong, I bet it had to do with both of us being behing nat routers he in cologe me at home, but skype doesnt have that isseu, though it does loos quality, security is more inportant than QoS
comcipher
Keep in mind this doesn't give you a Skype in number, people can't call you (unless they are doing it through Skype). This only gives you the ability to make outgoing calls, so I doubt people will end up paying for it because they are attached to a particular number. spektormax
yeh this is true its not really skype void. Its just skype out going, but still think about it. Lets say I want to call out of state, and have a LONG coversation with like my aunt or my borther. It might cost me leik 3/4 dollors in long distance. But instead, I pay 0. I have to admit though, the quialty is a bit sub par. It's not bad, jsut maybe its my headphones, but im used ot the hallow echo liek sound in teh back of most phoens, that way you know the persons ther. ALso, my head set really makes it soudn condensed. People on the other end say it doesn't sound bad. As for reasoning behind it. Besides the "drug effect", thers also the realiation of low price. Skype to Skype calling is free. Im prity sure the cost of bits ony the internet is equal to if not more to the cost of bits on the telephone network. I'm prity sure Skype has a VERY good deal on it so its roughly the same cost as doing it over IP. NOW, as for having a unique number, this costs money because now, instead of you calling out on thier 1 number to people and the phone companyes havign to track onyl one number, you have your own unique number. That means that you have to be added to the local distributino network (help me with termenolgy here phone phreakers) Also , the way I see it, they have to have soemthign monitorign your line 24/7 for incomign calls, as well as out going calls form skype. THats what you really pay for, not the use of the Skype netwrok or Skyp/telephone network, because thats not where the bulk costs come in.. T8y8
Comcast CDV for the win! On a serious note, this seems petty cool, but Skype never tickled my fancy, I use Gizmo for VOIP to VOIP, and CDV for VOIP-PSTN.
