Remove/Replace non-U3 CD Partition from USB drive

Recommended Posts

I have the same problem - USB stick I got at a conference has a CD partition with promotional stuff on it. I want to merge the partitions and format the drive.

According to USBDeview:

Device Name: USB Mass Storage Device

Serial Number: 080919011942b8

Vendor ID: 1307

Product ID: 0165

USB Class: 08

USB SubClass: 06

USB Protocol: 50

Any ideas how to do it?

Try this little tool, ChipGenius v2.64, http://209.85.171.104/translate_c?hl=en&am...xcDwzXiShNs-IKg

it's very good at identifying the controller-chip correctly and provides a link to the the right tool if available.

Follow the link, take note of the name and version of the tool and then download it from FlashBoot.ru :

Try this little tool...

Thanks for the help. I got all the way up to getting and using the appropriate tool, but now I'm at a loss of what to do to actually fix the drive.

I used the tool to ID the chip:

Device Name: ++[H:][G:]+USB Mass Storage Device(USB Device)(USB Device)

PnP Device ID: VID = 1307 PID = 0165

Serial Number: 080919011942B8

Revision: 0.00/0.00

Device Type: Standard USB device - USB2.0 High-Speed

Chip Vendor: USBest

Chip Part-Number: UT165

Product Vendor: (N/A)

Product Model: (N/A)

Tools on Web: http://bbs.mydigit.cn/read.php?tid=27876

Then I followed the link to http://bbs.mydigit.cn/read.php?tid=27876 and I think it tells me I need the tool UT165_1.65.10.0 to fix this drive. I got links to:

附件: 1.65.10.0.part1.rar (1024 K) 下载次数:2259

http://bbs.mydigit.cn/job.php?action=downl...6&aid=27139

附件: 1.65.10.0.part2.rar (854 K) 下载次数:1217

http://bbs.mydigit.cn/job.php?action=downl...6&aid=27140

Clicking those links takes me to a page where I have to register to download them, but I can't seem to register, because Google translation won't translate the registration page properly for me.

So I searched for the tool at http://209.85.171.104/translate_c?hl=en&am...picY6jzMYyJeuFg as you suggested, and it was there (called MP TOOL UT165 (UT163) 1.65.10.0).

I downloaded the tool and installed it. However, it installs some driver that makes both the CD and normal parts of the USB drive disappear from within Explorer and Disk Manager. ChipGenius changes to report the drive as:

Device Name: +FABULK

The MP Tool just shows a list of ports with no other information.

I tried uninstalling the driver and then my drives reappear, but I still can't see anything in the MP Tool. Reinstalling the driver just removes the 2 drives from Explorer and Disk Manager again, and changes the device name back to +FABULK in ChipGenius.

I feel I am so close to cracking this drive! Any ideas on what I am doing wrong, or how to actually make the MP Tool do what I need it to do?

Yes, first : stop messing around with Explorer, diskmanager and everything else when the production-tool and the special driver has been installed. To Windows the drive will NOT behave as "normal" when the production-tool/driver is running and all that matters is if the tool sees the drive or not.

Again, DO NOT access the flash-drive with explorer, diskmanager or anything else !

second :If you feel you are close to cracking it I won't take all the fun away from you (yet) :)

Well, the tool doesn't seem to see the drive. I don't have Explorer or Disk Manager or anything open - just the tool - and nothing appears in the list of things connected to any ports. If I unplug and plug the drive in again, nothing changes (except ChipGenius refreshes to show the drive is gone, then back again, as +FABULK). I have tried starting the tool with the drive plugged in, and starting without it plugged in, but nothing seems to make a difference.

I am ready for you to take all the fun away... because I'm not having all that much fun :(

The driver is an absolute requirement, the tool can not "talk" with the controller-chip without it .

The tool doesn't auto-enumerate the usb-port so you need to press F3 or select the menu-item;

"Refresh" seems to do the same btw..

It's probably a good idea to disconnect all USB-devices when running the tool and once you are done re-programming the drive you should un-install the software ..

Once the tool sees the flash-drive go to "Setting" (F1) .

In the first tab you have various options relating to how the drive identifies itself to windows (or any other OS) .

Of special interest is the option "Disk Type" .

If you select "Fixed" instead of the default "Removable" you will later be able to create and simultaneously mount multiple partitions on windows, just like any "normal" HDD .

You can pretty much change any setting on that tab to whatever you like, just leave the VID/PID alone ..

In the next tab you might want to change the option in the serial-number section to "don't change serial number" or maybe even define your own sr#

(and say goodbye to any warranty but you probably do that just by using the tool !! )

Last is the "Partition Settings" tab. To reclaim all the available space and create one large partition

(or "LUN" to be more exact, it's not the same as "partition"), go to "Public Area 1 (LUN 0)" and check "Partition Option", check that "Partition Size" is set to "auto", enter a "Volume label" (optional), select file-system, make sure all other options on the tab are grayed out, then save your settings (for reference in case you want to change something later ) and click "OK" .

When you are ready to apply the changes, just press the "spacebar" (and say goodbye to any warranty)

Thank you so much. Refresh didn't do anything for me, but F3 was the magic wand I needed. I have now blown away the junk on the drive and have a nice fresh drive to work with. Again, thanks for your help - brilliant.

The production-tool collection is here :

Thanks! Topic link is now http://hak5.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=8630

The chipsbank 2090 tool is a lot of fun to play with, but of course it is a bit dangerous. Clicking "start" will blow away the flash drive's existing configuration with not so much as a warning. That wasn't a problem for me, though, and I'm looking forward to being able to customize this flash drive in a way that would be impossible without the controller chip. This free (promotional item) flash drive is probably the most capable I've owned. :)

I tried using the utility from http://rapidshare.com/files/74291869/CBM20....8.3.2_1122.rar and my device's VID/PID is 0204/6025 (same as user takakia) however I ended up with unusual results...

Now only the 250MB chip will mount (well, will be given a drive letter) and the 2GB flash memory is nowhere to be found! How can I mount the 2GB flash memory? Is there any configuration I have to do in the umptool209X Settings (the utility posted earlier)?

I am quite familiar with Linux as it is my primary operating system. I have access to Windows on computers that do not belong to me, or even through VirtualBox for virtualization (full USB support). Should I try running the Chinese drivers in XP in VirtualBox?? I can back it up so I don't mind messing around with drivers with it, but I dunno how effective it would be at solving this.

Any help for using umptool209X or anything else so that I may use the 2GB again?

You need to accurately identify the controller and then use the corresponding version of the tool .

Use this to identify the controller and it's tool :

http://209.85.129.132/translate_c?hl=en&am...CRIwMj_3S0ZH1hg

Then download the tool from the link below instead of from the Chinese site the app links to :

http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=e...3Fname%3Diflash

I have no idea if this works in a VM under linux .

The tools are for windows and rely on specialized drivers to communicate with the controller

so I doubt it will work, at least not as intended ..

btw : You didn't tell exactly what you tried to do .. but whatever it was, you must have missed something :)

Doing this all on an XP laptop seeing as working with mounted USB to a virtual machine is messy.

What I did was I used the CBM209XUmptoolV1.8.3.2_1122. That cleared that chip (that was originally identified as a CD-ROM). In windows, that chip was H:\ and the 2GB was K:\. H:\ (which was ROM before) is now open and I can do whatever I want to it (it's only 240MB though), and I can no longer mount K:\ from the pendrive, where I have the 2GB. I then tried using MFPT, however I don't think I managed to get anywhere using MFPT seeing as I couldn't "see" the pendrive mounted in the MFPT utility. Is there a screenshot tutorial floating around for MFPT?

Anyway, from ChipGenius.exe:

Device Name: +[E:]+USB Mass Storage Device(CBM Flash Disk USB Device)

PnP Device ID: VID = 0204 PID = 6025

Serial Number: 261539001DA13E00

Revision: 5.00

Device Type: Standard USB device - USB2.0 High-Speed

Chip Vendor: Chipsbank(??)

Chip Part-Number: CBM2091

Product Vendor: CBM

Product Model: Flash Disk

Tools on Web: http://bbs.mydigit.cn/read.php?tid=36208

Looks like I've got a CBM2091. Going by the VID/PID, there are a number of utilities...I tried a good number of UMPTools and the only one I got working was the CBM209XUmptoolV1.8.3.2_1122 I tried in the first place. I even tried CBM2090E2091 Umptool V1.9.5 (which I thought would be a good call) though even that one crashed.

Maybe I would need some good instructions on getting the MFPT to work with my pendrive...not sure how it works; I have no visible indication that the pendrive is recognized.

...

Oh since I ran that CBM209XUmptoolV1.8.3.2_1122 again the device is now set as removable media, so at least I can boot the UBCD from it (not too much I can do with less than 240MB).

ChipGenius says you need :

CBM209X UMPTool V1.9.17_A30515[20080515]

it's usually very reliable ..

I don't have that version, it's not on the russian site, never got around to

registering an account at the chinese site; also, it seems they want money (or "points" as they call it )

and I don't know where to buy china-money.. maybe I could trade in some of wifeys WoW-gold :)

But it does seem like something is working anyway, sometimes the MPT is backwards compatible ..

Is it possible that you somehow have created 2 partitions ?

Remember, under windows it is only possible to mount ONE partition (the first), if the device is seen

as "REMOVABLE". If you want 2 partitions you must change them both to be "FIXED"

(sometimes the MPT uses the terms "zip"(removable) and "HDD" (fixed) ) .

Screenshots ?? Try this, Faststone Capture :

http://www.321download.com/LastFreeware/fi...FSCapture53.zip

and then post a screenie of the settings you use in the MPT..

Is it this one ?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huawei_E220

You can flash the firmware, have a look here :

http://www.huawei.com/mobileweb/en/doc/lis...e=-1&id=736

I don't know about removing the CD-ROM.. It contains the firmware so it's important if you are to use the device ..

It's probably just a rebranded UFD-controller from one of the large manufacturers,

you will need to disassemble the thing to ID it properly (they usualy leave the original markings )

no its this one http://www.huawei.com/mobileweb/en/products/view.do?id=1960

I found another site with some information on it and they had taken it apart and had pictures , but all the boards were covered with something so you could not see any markings on the chips (done by the manufacturer i think)

As far as i can see the CD-ROM just has the drivers and application on it to make the modem work.

I used the huawei update which over wrote the o2 drivers/apps on the CD-ROM and it still worked as a modem so dont think there is any problem removing it.

My bank here in Spain just offered me a usb drive...

And it came with a cdfs partition on it... :(

I just used the ChipGenius v3.00 on it to find the vendor id, but with no luck...

PnP Device ID: VID = 0504 PID = 2009

Serial Number: 0008675583866405

Revision: 2.20/2.21

Device Type: Standard USB device - USB2.0 High-Speed

Chip Vendor: (No match record)

Chip Part-Number: (No match record)

Product Vendor: USB

Product Model: Flash Disk

Tools on Web: (N/A)

Anyone knows this one? What tool can i use?

Nope, you will have to disassemble it and read the markings on the controller-chip ..

They probably had it custom-made somewhere, the VID and PID doesn't return any results anywhere

so it's likely they have been changed . Or you could start trying the tools one by one until you find the right one :)
