Do i actually need security?

Mr Andrewson

Let us summarize:

windows + intelligent user (very small percentage of all windows users) = fairly secure

windows + the majority of users = bot net infested planet (where we currently live)

linux + intelligent linux user (this is a much higher percentage then windows users) = fairly safe

linux + <insert description for the non-intelegent linux user base> = ??? (don't know, I'v ever encountered a compromised Linux system that was because the user did some thing)

I can't imagine an Internet where linux makes up the majority of bot nets (because there is a much lower return rate for effort invested)?.

What a lot of people do not know is that windows keeps many things hidden from you. When I use windows, for example to game, I never feel as if I am the owner, because you really have NO control of your system when using windows. Now let me explain why windows is the way it is, because they want to comfort the computer illiterate, they are not bad people in any way but windows emphasize of making every thing uber easy has RUINED THE CURRENT GENERATION. There are so many computer illiterate people, not because they choose to be but because the default OS for so many has shown them that the proper way is to be given everything easy, the truth is the internet is not all fun and games. For example take phising -

width=1200 height=565http://www.phishtank.com/images/phish_world_map.gif[/img]

Does microsoft warn of phising to its customers?

No, why? Because simply they want to sell more and not tell people about the truths of security in modern times.

windows crafts people to become computer illiterate. Now if you are a computer literate person using windows, ok thats fine, but what keeps your system clean after the constant windows exploits and spyware, adware, virii that target specifically windows.

I am so glad I get to reply first on this one...

tomb is not acting all high and mighty he's just pointing out what he feels is common knowldge(or should be) and there for thinks  of the people who dont know are noobs (a guess baiced on my oberservations)

he may be an ass about it but that's just his personality

and sparta microsoft is warning users about phising and the dangers of computing in a virus world

from my phone this is all i can think of I shall post better once im home

Well shit, just about every time I start up IE 7 it warns me of phishing.  Second, that is why MS is doing so well and has something like 96 percent of all computers have their software, because they make it easy, not difficult, I welcome the changes to make things easier (accept when they hurt tech support jobs).  This is simply my opinion, I hate it when people start bashing MS when it comes down to it, all of us use it.  Even if we run linux, chances are all of us still have MS boxes.  So you can complain about it all you want, but MS is where the party's at.

What you forgot...

linux + the majority of users=Oh shit what do I do, this isn't Microsoft (so if they can't do shit why bother with linux, just stick with MS).

Which brings me back to my final point, who gives a shit about 98% of users that aren't us, and don't know much about computers.  MS is doing their job with products lke Vista making OS's that are very secure.  Linux is fun for messing around with, but when you need to get work done, MS is where it shines.

During the attacks on hak5.org a large amount of the attacking hosts were compromised linux boxes... Bad security practices are always a killer, no matter what OS you use.

Does microsoft warn of phising to its customers?

No, why? Because simply they want to sell more and not tell people about the truths of security in modern times.

IE7 has anti-phising features built in. And you will find (as I did, working for a ISP that provided dedicated servers) that the bulk of phising sites are hosted on badly secured linux servers. The desktop OS has nothing to do with that.

I know what is going on, on my computer.  Linux fanboys just can't handle some people just don't have problems with Windows.  Believe what you may, at the end of the day it's people like Sparda and k1u who let Linux down because of their extremist attitudes.

It is ok... I feel sorry for you. Because as much you can call us fanboys, judging from your posts.

Many people are misinformed, C# and .NET are an open standard.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Language_Infrastructure

I wasn't aware of that.  I see there are also Windows ports of .NET.  Let me say, then, that I simply don't trust Microsoft technology, but that's mostly politics.  I also think that their software is typically too complicated.  By association I put their languages and APIs in the same category.  I've used the Windows API a bit, and I much prefer POSIX.

Can anyone recommend a good book for C++ and C#?

Thanks

The C++ Programming Language (Bjarne Stroustrup) is the best reference to the language.  I didn't use it to learn the language, though.

POSIX and Windows API are completely different.  POSIX isn't an API, it's a standard.  Windows even implements POSIX standards fully, where as Linux and BSD don't.

For TomB my friend you carry on with these attacks and this superiority, while you may think of yourself at a high position the truth is you are at a low position. You have great skill but what does that show for you, absolutely nothing, for it is not your bragging and arrogance that gains you respect it is your attitude amongst the people. I do not say this as a foe but as a friend, you must change your ways. If you wish to be a hypocrite, then by far be one, for you may try to undermine us TomB but the truth is your words mean nothing towards me. Now post up a post trying to attack me or call me a fanboy or Linux extremist if that is your will. Thank you TomB.

You quote a totally unrelated post, why? I shall quote some of the post from your forums and let people judge for themselves about you

As I have been saying for the last 4 years.

ALL HAIL LINUX!

IT IS THE OPINION OF MILLIONS... MILLIONS OF USER WHO CONTRIBUTE TO A FREE OPEN SOURCE OPERATING SYSTEM WITH UNITY AS ITS MAIN GOAL. THE VOICE OF THOSE WHO EXPERIENCE A FREE AND OPEN SOURCE OPERATING SYSTEM WILL ALWAYS BE LOUDER... ALWAYS...

THAT LINUX IS NOT SUB-PAR...!

ALL HAIL LINUX FOR EVER! THE OPERATING SYSTEM OF THE PRESENT AND FUTURE!

Actually Linux is very friendly. Much more friendlier... I have seen people with barely no computer knowledge install Linux easily instead of windows where you see a blue text screen (hahaha).

Linux keeps growing... better and better and better.

windows just keeps adding worthless features to hide behind there old crap.

Haha! Windows got pwned.

People like TomB will always favor windows because they do not understand the BEAUTY OF LINUX.

Linux is always excelling. windows excels every 5 years because it masks over old crap with new bigger crap.

I wonder if TomB will apologize then?

Apologise for what?  I said nothing to say sorry about...

As in, in the future when Linux reigns supreme.

So yeah, you ARE a fanboy.  You just choose not to accept the truth.

Yes I'm a good programmer.  You think this shows nothing?  I think you'll find this is wrong.  It shows I have goals, and determination to get where I need to be.  I don't brag, you interpret things I say as bragging.  This is not my problem, but yours.  You're just a script kiddy and your website proves this.  You've always seemed to be jealous of my programming abilities always stating on MSN that you're going to get a better job than me.

So k1u, before you try giving 'advice', I want to you understand this; look at yourself first, I don't care about what YOU think of me as your another person on the Internet, and finally stop thinking you are as knowledgable as you think you are, because you're not.

95% of the human race cannot use computers, unless you want to stop everyone but the people who do know what there doing from using computers they have to be made easier. Stop thinking everyone is like you, most people are, and will forever be computer illiterate. For these people, linux is next to useless as a desktop OS.

There are so many computer illiterate people, not because they choose to be but because the default OS for so many has shown them that the proper way is to be given everything easy, the truth is the internet is not all fun and games.

On that line, no one should drive unless they can strip and rebuild an engine, and no one should use a phone unless the know they details of PSTN. Technology is to complex for everyone to know everything these days.

linux + <insert description for the non-intelegent linux user base> = ???

doesnt exist, y? becuase dumb users can not install linux let alone use it.

Doesnt that creat a rather huge issue? Windows is a family based OS, its built so that everyone can use it, everyone who works security knows, that for easy of access u drop security, though for maximum security u drop easy access. MS has invested billions to make sure that they can secure as much as possible though still allow Windows to be classed as a Family OS.

i have nothing against Linux Fan bois, all to there own. But for all the ones i know, they use it as braggin rights, something bad about Windows is realeased and its like, "well thats never gonna happen to me, coz i use Linux". As mentioned i have nothing against linux and use it ruffly the same amount as i spend on Windows, but ive never seen Linux as anythin to brag about, e-penis does not exist.

A user who is able to properly use Linux, is easly able to secure windows, or be able to use it with out the need of AV / FW's. its easy Linux is for porn. (jk).

Thats one of the few exceptions, even you have to admit that.  Ubuntu 7.1 is very user friendly, but still no where near where MS OS's are like XP and Vista.

Perhaps this indicates the level of intelligence of the users more than any thing else (more percentage = more stupid).

http://www.internetworldstats.com/top20.htm http://www.internetworldstats.com/stats.htm

WOW look at that the largest number of internet users is also the largest number of phishing sites it's almost like because there's more of them they have a larger percentage of phishing sites... I wonder...

This is what I hate about computers, try as I might, sarcasm simply does not port over well to the internet.  The *sarcasm* things are lame, so don't say that that is a way to be sarcastic, and yes I was being sarcastic.  Just because we are American Sparda does not mean we are all retarded.  Although there are a lot of stupid people here, there are a lot of stupid people everywhere.

I generally  keep multiple virus scans installed, but i have none of them in my startup,  i just use them as on demand scanners like  how you would use adaware or spybot.

as long as you  know to keep your self safe, you  will be fine

also one thing I recommend is  making a 4-8GB partition on your hard drive, then install a second copy of windows

that copy will be your  testing OS, if you really want to run something but don't trust it,  run it first in that OS

(ps make sure you hide the other partitions (for me partition magic does this automatically,    each partition is invisible from each other )

and if you have extra hard drive space, then create a 2-3GB partition and install a 3rd copy of windows, that will be your back up  windows install,  (in that one, only install your favorite browser, and drivers and update it once in a while,  do your best to keep that install as safe as possible.

if your main windows install craps out or if your second windows install for testing gets completely messed up then  you will be happy to know that you can restore it in under 5 minutes by having partition magic overwrite that partition with a copy of the back up windows install

(windows may only take 30 minutes to install, but it takes days to fully set up )  better to  give up 2-3GB  and turn  os reinstalls into a 5 minute job )

Or, use a VM for testing dodgey shit/browsing for keygens. Undo discs are much easier than all that pissing about.

But if that isn't an option, instead of creating multiple installs of windows on your disk just look at disc imaging.
