You said it was old, maybe something in the hardware is causing issues and crashing the system. It may be so old that Ubuntu can;t run with it's hardware specs/resources available to it. I have an older pc that Ubuntu fails to load on as well, so it is probably a hardware limitation as far as Ubuntu goes.

The 'shutdown' not found, sounds like you did something to the system or something/someone else did something to your system. Tried reinstalling Windows?

I never heard of a pc that could install win2000 but not XP. I have XP on my wifes pc with 333mhz, 512 meg ram and the pc is old as sh*t.

If its old, why not Try DamnSmallLinux, it will stop Sparda saying Ubuntu and Probably help.
