Ripping DVDs for Orb/BitTorrent

AVI is a container format and MPEG4 is a compression format. It's not really good in any way except there is a widespread ability to play AVI files (since it's a Microsoft format their applications can understand them). If you want a more advanced container that can have multiple audio streams and subtitles you could use Ogg or Matroska. Matroska also supports menus like on DVDs. Using an MPEG4 implimentation is probably good advice, I use XviD but there are others. Ripping DVDs, not sure, I use mencoder, but since you didn't research this yourself and asked on a forum instead (I'm not downing you for that or anything, I'm just guessing you want somthing that's simple to use) I recommend something with a GUI.
