From Wikipedia:

09 F9 11 02 9D 74 E3 5B D8 41 56 C5 63 56 88 C0 is an HD-DVD decryption key that was leaked on April 30, 2007. The source of the leak is unclear. It is of interest to cryptographic researchers, as it can be used to play a protected HD-DVD movie in Linux, bypassing the normal DRM. The key will also allow for programs analagous to DeCSS for DVDs.

In a cease and desist order from the Advanced Access Content System Licensing Administrator addressed to Google Inc, the letter humorously included the code in question. [1]

Answering my own question in case anyone else was interested as well: It's supposedly a processing key (better than a device key) that was found a while ago, it's getting attention now because of the DMCA notices.

If we get a DMCA takedown notice it will be removed.

wtf, I realize that they would be angry, but

why would you try to police the internet?

Talk about masturbation w/o the payoff.

I'm a bit confused by that comment (especially the part about masturbation). They've been doing this for years, in fact the exact same thing happened with DeCSS which others have alluded to or explicitly pointed out. They don't seem to realise attempting to suppress something on the Internet tends to make it appear in more places as freedom of speech advocates mirror it.

I am going to print it on the back of a T-Shirt and wear it. What are they going to do, DDoS Me?

Has anyone been able to compile it? I have gone over the code and thought it was OK, so i decided to Compile it. I have tryed MSDev and TC.

yes. It seams to be available so many ways, it must be illegal. I mean, distibute it through MPEG's and PNG's and code it through song.

Well, technically it's illegal, but pretty much all Linux/BSD DVD playing software (I doubt stuff on OS X does, though) uses a variation of it or a brute force attack, so you don't really need to compile it yourself.

Today was an insane day. And as the founder of Digg, I just wanted to post my thoughts…

In building and shaping the site I’ve always tried to stay as hands on as possible. We’ve always given site moderation (digging/burying) power to the community. Occasionally we step in to remove stories that violate our terms of use (eg. linking to pornography, illegal downloads, racial hate sites, etc.). So today was a difficult day for us. We had to decide whether to remove stories containing a single code based on a cease and desist declaration. We had to make a call, and in our desire to avoid a scenario where Digg would be interrupted or shut down, we decided to comply and remove the stories with the code.

But now, after seeing hundreds of stories and reading thousands of comments, you’ve made it clear. You’d rather see Digg go down fighting than bow down to a bigger company. We hear you, and effective immediately we won’t delete stories or comments containing the code and will deal with whatever the consequences might be.

If we lose, then what the hell, at least we died trying.

Digg on,

Kevin

I am wondering, what happens when *everyone* says no to a takedown notice?
