tulcod
Hey guys, I was like, thinking lately. We hacker's do come together. But... do we really? We actually mainly chat and post together. Is that all? To improve the "family" feeling and get better connections to eachother (network wise), I think we'll need a huge hak.5 VPN. For those who don't know what a VPN is: see it as a LAN network, but there's no cables. It's all via the internet. What do we need? -Someone who will host the router (i guess a TUN system is the easiest). -People on the VPN. -Some notices about this VPN by Darren or Wess in the show. So what do you think? Good idea? Bad idea? Why? What is the problem? Please post!
Sparda
So basiclly, you want a free VPN service? :P
Shaun
Hah, I don't think I would want to be on a VPN with most the people on this forum.
anyedie
I think thats a really neat idea, and by the Poll, it looks like a good bit of people agree. I would be apart of it! :o
intelspeed
yeah, count me in, i think it would be cool to have 1 big vpn network for the hak5 community.
Sparda
But a VPN to do what? WASTE is easy to use for VPN style file sharing.
tulcod
But a VPN to do what? WASTE is easy to use for VPN style file sharing. lol, the whole idea of VPN is like, useless. but it makes stuff like setting up services for eachother easier and safer. Sparda
So, basically, it's purpose would be to make a LAN that any one can join so it's completely open to abuse?

kickarse
Excellent idea! I need a way to test my hack... err... communication skills. Like it was said before, some of you I don't want near my network. Why not just use Hamachi?

Chris Gerling
I don't know if a completely "open" one would work. There is a reason that companies charge money for VPNs. I personally run a VPN for myself and some friends off of my Linksys WRT54GL (DD-WRT firmware), but the question becomes one more of liability than possibility here. If some joe schmoe stumbles across a sticky post on the forum here which lists the VPN information, connects to it, and downloads child porn, it's probably not going to be that hard to fight off legally, but will be expensive. What happens if he uses it while he is wardriving and does the same thing? I think it might be possible on some level, but would require some heavy management to make sure there aren't any retards on it. Perfect solution for those us of who travel a lot. [...] so the passwords and stuff should not be spreaded out like crazy: we'd have to use like, some sort of pass request via irc system. about the child porn: not everyone puts that kinda stuff on his apache server :p
moonlit
We used to have a Hamachi server, no-one used it.
tulcod
We used to have a Hamachi server, no-one used it. hamachi... 16 users... no extended settings, like you should have in an ordinary vpn client...
VaKo
No offence the the OP, but I have enough trouble with IRC script kiddies and people trying to steal accounts off of me already. A VPN would be asking for it. If people were more mature then maybe.
kickarse
Use it in conjunction with RADIUS??
cooper
As was asked before, WHY do we need it? We currently contact eachother via the internet, and communicate using the forum, IRC, IM and apparently sometimes a little VOIP action. What would we gain by having this in the VPN? What more would we want that is not very feasible in the internet case, but feasible in the VPN case? To the outside world, the VPN would be a barrier to entry. Do we really want to appear so elitist? Rest assured, all the services mentioned will at the very least remain around in the open Internet world. How much fun will IRC be when you're on the VPN server with 2 groups each containing a small handful of people? Knowing that a lot more interesting people, and that small handful of people that are on the VPN server are on the open network, I forsee a very, VERY short lifespan on this idea. Unless a unique way to communicate comes around that is excellent for VPN, but sucks for the regular internet, this idea is a dud. Sorry. Chris Gerling
Yeah my line of thinking here is that VPNs have a purpose in security. "Open" VPNs don't really follow this, because it's supposed to be a secure end-to-end connection.
Sparda
It's secure in that your ISP or government can't see what your doing, unless they realise that the VPN server you are connected to is open and they connect to it as well.
