natural_orange
1.) Dump it into a .zip 2.) rename it .jpeg 3.) Done Obviously not for really secure stuff, but its a good way to hide stuff quickly.
Garda
i'd find it if i was looking for stuff on your computer, but your 12yo little brother probably wouldn't, unless he watches the show ;) 500MB .jpeg files would just scream out at me also, what are you so worried about? are you ashamed that you enjoy looking at naked women? anyedie
for another easy solution use truecrypt. :D
Dаrren Kitchen
Or, TrueCrypt in an alternatives Data Stream with a hidden volume if you are very paranoid.
Paralys
Or if you're superparanoid and go to school, keep the side off your case and pop your HD out in the morning and throw it in your backpack... no one will be able to look at anything while you're gone then... (i know this sounds overly protective, but works if you have really nosey parents..)
Deveant
lol or just buy a removable bay.
cooper
Given the way I treated my backpack in those days, I might aswell unrecoverably delete the content from the start. If you can't keep your parents off your machine (for instance because it's actually their machine) get yourself a decent USB stick, or if you must an external HD. Work directly off of that and keep it with you at all times. Note that if your parents didn't trust you before, you're already in a world of trouble and this behaviour of yours most certainly will not help improve things. metatron
I’m extremely paranoid and now use a custom quantum cryptography solution (still under testing) across my network. Truecrypt is an easy and free way to secure your files and is one of the best options out there if you don’t have the cash for a higher end solution. Cosmo
I got one better with less hassle: 1 Dump it to a .7z 2 Encrypt it 3 Rename the extension to .avi This way, 500megs will not look out of place, and it will look like it's a corrupted file when someone tries to play it. deleted
or, do what i do, upgrade the Flash Memory in my TV Box, Partition it, One partition to look exactly like the original flash card (so the box will still work) and the other partition my hidden files. Nanob0t
Yeah, I just use laser defense grids in my computer room, and I have custom mutating encryption string protection on all of my files, and an active staff of Artificially Intelligent robots constantly scanning my computer for any outside influence. :P

Neondog82
So does no one else put their sensitive files on a USB flash stick, put it in a condom and then store that in their sigmoid colon? I tried that once but my wife and dog found it still! After that i just started storing it in my "stick sock", they dont touch that one! j/k You could also try remote storage. I don't know how much stuff you are trying to keep away though. Store the files in your email, or get some free web hosting somewhere. Lastly i dont know who you are trying to keep the files from, but if they arent that tech savy then you could just do what you mentioned in the first post and then hide the file and make sure you set the OS to now show hidden files. tim.vangehugten
1)buy your own pc If you can't afford it, you just dump your files on your gmail/hotmail/whatever account or just make a protected partition (which is only accessible by you of course)

m0u53
lol these are all good ideas but i think my technique is the BEST :) Create a New Folder Fill the folder full of your porn, passes, phone numbers, hacking tools, you get the point? rename the file to one of these: - 'funny sound.{0003000D-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}' - 'Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D} - 'aX0023sys.{ECD4FC4F-521C-11D0-B792-00A0C90312E1}' - 'internet explorer.{FBF23B42-E3F0-101B-8488-00AA003E56F8}' - 'keys.{BD84B380-8CA2-1069-AB1D-08000948F534}' - 'Dial-Up networking.{992CFFA0-F557-101A-88EC-00DD010CCC48}' anything after the . example: not porn or hidden file i swer.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D} this will turnthe folder into a control panel and when clicked will open control panel your entire system will think its control panel meaning it wont say 600mb it wont say any mb but how do i change this back omg wtf do i do open it with zip and dobule click the folder and remove the contents and theyer you go File Protection 101 ---------------------------------------- orignaly writeen by satan666 in 1996 on the preakers BBS

Chalito
Well, when it comes to keeping my personal files on my PC secret, I make sure that the basic stuff is in place. 1) Since my PC is always on even when I'm at work I make sure that have have password protect on. So as soon and my screen saver comes on it will ask for a password when you move the mouse. I think this is good if you have alot of people in your room contently, or you have a family that likes to get into your business. 2) Never keep your really important files on your internal or non-removable Hard Drive. This is a big rule for me. I keep all important personal files on a thumb stick that I carry with me and any other info that I would need I keep on a removable Hard Drive that I keep either in a secret spot or at a friends house who isn't tech savvy cause I wouldn't want him reading it either. Of course you can alway give them the Hard Drive and not the USB cable lol. 3)Like some other people have mentioned, truecrypt is also another great alternative. I have been using it for about a month and it's a really great way to keep your private files hidden. I actually use it at work and have my boss using it on his machine as well. There are also other steps you can take to make sure that your files are kept hidden. I'm going to try what m0u53 said with making the files look like a control panel but that just seems like too much work especially if your like me and need to get to those files every 5 minutes. Unless its pr0n in which you need to get to it like ever 10 minutes lol j/k. But Give this stuff a try and you should be one step closer to being more secure.
