If I understand you correctly, this can be achieved using Kismet. Let Kismet scan and from the webui select the access point you are interested in. This brings up an information pane. Select the 802.11 section and scroll down to the clients. There you can see the mac/oui of the clients as well as other info. It shows actual wifi clients as well as those that are bridged (ie not wifi connected but on the same LAN as the AP). This is all done without actually connecting to the AP.
