raising the public opinion of hackers

So as I am sure everyone here is aware the public opinion of hackers is really low so I wrote something to raise it. Here it is in all it unedited glory.

What is a Hacker

By: Aaron Capper

1 common question that comes up is what is a hacker? Many peoples perception is that we are bad, that we exploit computer systems, we write viruses, that somehow we are responsible for the ills of the internet, this is in essence false. Hackers are not people that exploit computers, and write viruses and spyware. A hacker is someone who has an insatiable lust for technology. Essentially we are people that are mesmerized by the computer. We take it and learn everything we can about it. We understand the computer at its core level. Not at the level where if I click this button the computer reacts by doing this. We understand it at the level that if I click this button the computer runs this program and that does something, then it translates this into something human that I can interact with.

Our fascination is driven by possibility. What we can do with this now that we have this, from the day it was created the computer was essentially a device filled with possibility. It becomes more then just the device we sit at and use it becomes more of a second hand. It stops being a device and more of a window, into a world that so few people understand. People have described it as a descension into a metaverse. Why a descension, because we don't understand it on a level above other people we understand it on a lower level, the core level if you will. (guess what I am gonna use the word metaverse, if you dont know what it is, its the information universe, basically all information).

So why is public opinion so low? It is because we are not normal in societies eye. We understand something that is abnormal to most. So few people understand computers that anyone that does understand it as we do is seen as being abnormal. Often hackers are looked down upon so a lot of them do not show that they know anything about it at all. We are seen as lesser people sometimes because of the fact that we are not understood. No one understands what drives us and no one understands what we understand. Most people fear what they don't understand. (if you are a hacker and you read this then you should know thats why the moron with a 5th grade vocabulary keeps trying to screw with you.)

You can see this fear in the government almost daily. The way hackers are prosecuted, Kevin Mitnick was held for 4 years without a trial, he finally did get a trial in which no evidence was provided against him. It wasn't that he had commited a hanoius crime it was that they where afraid of his inteligience. Because they felt that he was smart enough to essentially start a nuclear holocaust if he had access to a phone. Most would agree this was rather far fetched but this was the reason he was held for so long. After he got out of prison he was on supervised release where he could not use anything other then a standard telephone. (please how the hell do you start a nuclear war from a phone, it isn't technically possible, I seriously think the judge was on something.)

Business and government is afraid of hackers because of the fact that we are very good at getting information and exposing it. Most governments and businesses do not want their actions to be published or known. The risk that there might be someone out there that could get this information makes them a threat. We are not anti-American and we are not anarchists we just want information. Hackers see things that are going on as being wrongs against society that are executed by corporations. For example I am sure that everyone reading this has bought a Windows based PC. After about 2 weeks of use it runs slow. This is because it is infected with something called Spyware. Spyware is essentially a small program that turns on in the background of the computers operating system. The purpose of spyware is to gather information off your computer. Basically it goes through and gets your email address, any email addresses you have saved or are in a plain text format, and then it will grab and passwords and logins that are stored in your cookies that are saved by the internet That is on top of gathering all your personal information, address, real name, stuff like that. What happens is you got lots of spyware on your computer and it slows it down on a massive scale eating up your CPUs power. If you want some proof of how spyware gets your password, well if youve used Myspace then youve probably heard of profile hijacking. (funny thing is most of the spyware companies reside in Silicon Valley well within law enforcements reach.)

Microsoft, Ebay, and especially Myspace all make money from spyware. They contract out to spyware companies like Adrevolver, GATOR, and Adsoft. This software essentially as I stated get onto your computer and causes it to slow down as well as collecting all your personal information. Whats worse is that this is illegal under the canspam act. Has anyone ever really been in trouble for creating spam. No, why, they have money and lots of it too. How can this not be prosecuted. It damages other people property and can slow down a computer by 20%. Hackers did not do this, if anything weve tried to get rid of this by telling people about it. Hackers have contacted judges and attorneys all which refuse to do nothing. Even the specialists set aside for computer related crime when notified just look the other way. This is what makes us so upset at how our world, metaverse, the internet, whatever you want to call it has changed.

For those that think that hackers are bad and immoral I would like to present to you a list that will more then likely change those theories people have created.

Things we Believe in:

-We have no religious bias (Muslim, Christian, Catholic, Jewish, Klingon we don't care)

-We have no sex based bias (male/female it doesn't matter, although female hackers would be nice because then I might get a date :-), nows the part where you burst into laughter.)

-We have no race bias (black, white, brown, hell purple it doesn't matter)

-None of the pop culture BS (really if you listen to Britney Spears and cry who gives a shit)

-We believe in the spreading of knowledge (that is knowledge, not something that impedes it like the other shit.)

This is a short list, if you notice these are all things that we do not care about. We care about the spreading of knowledge and the use of the internet for information. That is legit information, not malicious information.

Things we don't believe in:

-Spreading of race hate (this makes the spread of information limited based on race, that means all you neo nazis are shit outa luck and need to get the hell off the internet, before we put the smack down on your server and send all the info on it to the FBI, really though if you cant get over skin pigmentation I dont know how your gonna get over being one of the sisters in county.)

-Stupid sexist crap (we all admit to being attracted to the opposite sex which means that we can understand the photos, but when some pric creates a webiste to say how women should stay in the kitchen, well its BS and they need to get the hell off the internet.)

-All the fanatics that think one religion is better then the other (guess what you Palestinians who post how you hate Jews so much need to get the hell off the internet.)

-Cant forget the pedophiles (get the hell off the internet because what you do is just wrong on so many levels, you and the neo nazis can share a bunk in prison together, plus the bright side is the neo nazis will probably shank you within the first week.)

So lets see if we can get this down right:

1.If you are a racist you can not be a hacker

2.If you are a sexist you can not be a hacker

3.If you hate people of a different religion then yourself you are not a hacker

4.If you hate people based on their music, TV, clothing whatever you are not a hacker

Also I would like to not stealing code does not make you a hacker so Bill Gates you suck and will be in a seperate cell beside the neo nazis and pedophiles only because we dont want them to shank you or make you their bitch. (sodomy is just wrong on so many levels.)

I hope this document clears up a lot of the questions that anyone may have. Thanks for reading it if you bothered to read this far. This is who we are, not a word, and no one is gonna make us change.

Oh my got there are SOO many thing's wrong with this... I hardly know where to start...

First off let's list the Merriam-Webster definition of hacker

Main Entry: hack·er

Pronunciation: 'ha-k&r

Function: noun

1 : one that hacks

2 : a person who is inexperienced or unskilled at a particular activity <a tennis hacker>

3 : an expert at programming and solving problems with a computer

4 : a person who illegally gains access to and sometimes tampers with information in a computer system

and lets assume you are talking about #3

we'll start here because this is what set off my rant

So lets see if we can get this down right:

1.If you are a racist you can not be a hacker

2.If you are a sexist you can not be a hacker

3.If you hate people of a different religion then yourself you are not a hacker

4.If you hate people based on their music' date=' TV, clothing whatever you are not a hacker[/quote']

But they are elitists because if theres something not Politically Correct about you you can't be a hacker

Also I would like to not stealing code does not make you a hacker so Bill Gates you suck and will be in a seperate cell beside the neo nazis and pedophiles only because we dont want them to shank you or make you their bitch. (sodomy is just wrong on so many levels.)

you can't list one thing that Bill Gates stole so why is he going to jail?

1 common question that comes up is what is a hacker? Many peoples perception is that we are bad, that we exploit computer systems, we write viruses,

Hackers do, do that... the black hats anyway

that somehow we are responsible for the ills of the internet, this is in essence false ... and write viruses and spyware.

We understand it at the level that if I click this button the computer runs this program and that does something, then it translates this into something human that I can interact with.

you right about this I'll give you that one... (oh and mesmerized? intrigued maybe, but mesmerized makes it sound like we don't understand it)

So why is public opinion so low? It is because we are not normal in societies eye. We understand something that is abnormal to most. So few people understand computers that anyone that does understand it as we do is seen as being abnormal. Often hackers are looked down upon

yes looked down upon thats why the good ones make 6 figures...

so a lot of them do not show that they know anything about it at all. We are seen as lesser people sometimes because of the fact that we are not understood. No one understands what drives us and no one understands what we understand. Most people fear what they don't understand. no he like everyone else, watches the news/listens to the media and trusts them to tell the truth/make their decisions for them

Business and government is afraid of hackers because of the fact that we are very good at getting information and exposing it. Most governments and businesses do not want their actions to be published or known. The risk that there might be someone out there that could get this information makes them a threat. no they make their money from ads not adware/spyware.... it's the ad company's that make the money off spyware

and I think microsoft makes their money from office software and OSes

For those that think that hackers are bad and immoral I would like to present to you a list that will more then likely change those theories people have created.

-Stupid sexist crap (we all admit to being attracted to the opposite sex which means that we can understand the photos, but when some pric creates a webiste to say how women should stay in the kitchen, well its BS and they need to get the hell off the internet.)

Dude I know what you are trying to say but it is a little hardcore. Many hackers probably are biased against things but put that aside in the world of hacking. Truth is we are all friends on this forum bu had we all met face to face, I would say that wouldnt be the case. I just think it is a case of hack responsibly and if you dont like somebody , steer clear of them. The one thing in hacker culture that irks me aa bitis the treatment some noobs get. Sure some are lazy and don't puit in the time but others have nowhere else to turn to and then get berated for doing the smart thing, asking questions. Dont give them all the answers, just try to guide them a little. The morons that are too lazy to even google for what they search for don't deserve shit.

Not knocking your work because you obviously put alot of effort into it, it may just be a bit extreme? Still, I applaud your intentions and writing something like this is quite difficult to keep EVERYONE happy. I'm a stubborn little bugger!

only one thing to argue with you about Someone. Something Gates stole? How about DOS and windows? OK, so he didn't exactly steal DOS, he bought it, but it wasn't his idea either. :P

Other than that, I fairly agree with your criticism. There were just too many absolutes and not enough clarification in the doc.

noo my whole problem with that part is... it's always of Bill did this Bill did that someone needs to shove a large baton up Gate's ass.... or I never really heard of that one but Gates never really did anything by himself it was microsoft that did it but Bill gets the blame

Everything in this industry is based on something else. He didn't steal it, he payed for it and rebranded it. Gates has the money he has for a reason... he's not a criminal (to my knowledge), he just got lucky with someone else's ideas and concepts, people do that all the time.

Hence why I said he didn't exactly steal it. He's just built an empire off of others' ideas. :P

Hey, he threw the ball Gary Kildall's way, and he dropped it.

And we know where both Apple and Microsoft got the idea for a gui.

Zerox PARC the king of ball droppers. Even WORD came out of there.

The quicker people learn a hacker is separate from technology the better. A hacker at the core is a person who uses learned knowledge to gain more information about something for knowledge, change, or creation. People who splice plants are hackers. People who use genetics to change animals are hackers. They may never touch a network etc but they are still hackers.

Hacker is way more of a state of mind than anything. It's a thirst for knowledge in a subject with the idea of an action and nothing more. Everything is culture based and subject to opinion just like every other dumb label for people in the world :).

This is also why i am so quick to say i am a noob because in truth i am a noob at somethings. Doesn't mean i am dumb or any of the other crap that goes along with the label noob. I guess i just don't put much value on labels of people because people are not labels they are people.

Hackers are people to... Just like that guy who can make your plumbing work. You have no idea how it works, but he does. And vice-versa with computers. Hackers come in every shape, size, creed, color and race you can imagine, this article does not reflect that.

To much semantics...

Please take the time to read SomeoneElse's response to your rant.

If you want to explain (your idea of) hacker ethics, please stick to that. Don't write whole bibles about why you reject the alternatives. Keep it short and concise, and be very aware of the tone of your piece. If you read that piece to someone who wasn't much into computers, he'd either fall asleep half-way through, or get insulted because of the "I'm better than you because I do X where most others do Y".

Here's a start:

I'm a hacker. By that I mean that I enjoy tinkering with the computer. I enjoy taking things apart and putting them back together again, because by doing so I gain a deeper understanding of how that thing works. Hackers have gotten a bad rep because our tinkering tends to break stuff, and sometimes things break in such a way that it can be taken advantage of at the expense of others. Those who hack with this as their aim are called the "black hats". I, on the other hand, consider myself a "white hat". I don't set out to break things, I'm trying to teach myself as nobody is there to explain it to me. And whenever something I'm tinkering with behaves unexpectedly I try to notify those responsible so it can either get fixed, or they can explain to me why this behaviour is correct, again furthering my knowledge.

I don't think hackers believe anything in particular, as cooper said, we just like working out how things work.
agreed hackers are of no particular religion if any then athiest ....

hackers understand the system and have the tendency to always check their data and info and find more of it to back up the original , no matter if its computer related or not , .... they realise and work with facts this is why i believe most will be athiest , cos i believe theire smart enough to not believe in a fairytale figure of who's existence there is no proof , the bible is like a personal webpage it can tell u facts , it can tell u fairytales , it is written by a human who probably thought it up based on facts in his life , liek a good novel its a good read but dont take it as a fact (this counts for "any" religion , those ppl need to wake up explain to me how there is a difference in believing wot book a (the bible) says is real and believing it and believing in book B (Harry potter) says is real and believing it ??

thus my reasoning real hackers are too smart/knowledgeable to believe in religion ...

however no-one can deny how many (mostly muslims) religious f*cks think they're hackers and deface websites ....

i can prove they arent real hackers cos in most cases they still use 13375p34k ....

(just check the attack archive @ zone-h)

take this one for example -> http://dlss.be.tt/?KXAMX

I don't believe in hackers.

I believe that there are people that enjoy finding out how things work in all subjects.

I believe that the term "hacker" has been hijacked by the general population of the world AND the tech field in different ways, with media both presenting "hackers" as superheroes and villians, and the computer community getting distracted by labels, subculture, and a general state of elitism.

I do not believe in hats. People are people, and they perform both good actions and bad actions. This isn't Star Wars, people.

I believe we should dump the term "hacker" altogether if we want to be taken seriously.

a black hat wants to know how something works so he can aubuse it to make money

a white hat wans to know because they like to learn and figure things out.

Another one got caught today, it's all over the papers. "Teenager Arrested in Computer Crime Scandal", "Hacker Arrested after Bank Tampering"...

Damn kids. They're all alike.

But did you, in your three-piece psychology and 1950's technobrain, ever take a look behind the eyes of the hacker? Did you ever wonder what made him tick, what forces shaped him, what may have molded him?

I am a hacker, enter my world...

Mine is a world that begins with school... I'm smarter than most of the other kids, this crap they teach us bores me...

Damn underachiever. They're all alike.

I'm in junior high or high school. I've listened to teachers explain for the fifteenth time how to reduce a fraction. I understand it. "No, Ms. Smith, I didn't show my work. I did it in my head..."

Damn kid. Probably copied it. They're all alike.

I made a discovery today. I found a computer. Wait a second, this is cool. It does what I want it to. If it makes a mistake, it's because I screwed it up. Not because it doesn't like me...

Or feels threatened by me...

Or thinks I'm a smart ass...

Or doesn't like teaching and shouldn't be here...

Damn kid. All he does is play games. They're all alike.

And then it happened... a door opened to a world... rushing through the phone line like heroin through an addict's veins, an electronic pulse is sent out, a refuge from the day-to-day incompetencies is sought... a board is found. "This is it... this is where I belong..."

I know everyone here... even if I've never met them, never talked to them, may never hear from them again... I know you all...

Damn kid. Tying up the phone line again. They're all alike...

You bet your ass we're all alike... we've been spoon-fed baby food at school when we hungered for steak... the bits of meat that you did let slip through were pre-chewed and tasteless. We've been dominated by sadists, or ignored by the apathetic. The few that had something to teach found us willing pupils, but those few are like drops of water in the desert.

This is our world now... the world of the electron and the switch, the beauty of the baud. We make use of a service already existing without paying for what could be dirt-cheap if it wasn't run by profiteering gluttons, and you call us criminals.

We explore... and you call us criminals.

We seek after knowledge... and you call us criminals.

We exist without skin color, without nationality, without

religious bias... and you call us criminals.

You build atomic bombs, you wage wars, you murder, cheat, and lie to us and try to make us believe it's for our own good, yet we're the criminals.

Yes, I am a criminal. My crime is that of curiosity. My crime is that of judging people by what they say and think, not what they look like. My crime is that of outsmarting you, something that you will never forgive me for.

I am a hacker, and this is my manifesto. You may stop this individual, but you can't stop us all... after all, we're all alike.

The Hackers Manifesto 2.0

NOTE: Do not take seriously. This is meant as a joke.

Another one got spammed today, it's all over the blogs. "Nigerian dies,

and the will money is handed out".

Damn tubes. They're all full.

But did you, in your three-piece suit and 2000s cubicle, ever take a look

behind the eyes of the Counter-Strike n00b? Did you ever wonder what made

him pwn, what forces aimed his gun, what may have molded him?

I am a pwnerer, enter my map...

Mine is a map that begins with hostages... I'm faster than most of the

other CTs, this crap they speak bores me.

Damn trucks. They're all slow.

I'm in my basement. I've listened to podcasts explain for the fifthteen

time how to hack an Xbox. I understand it. "No, Mr Dvorak, I didn't

upgrade to Windows Vista, I installed Linux."

Damn ISPs capping connections. They're all alike.

I made a discovery today. I found the outside world. Wait a second, this

is different. It does what the government tells it to. If it makes a

mistake, it's because religion fucked it up. Or the US government finds

oil in the middle east again. Or thinks the voting machines are broken.

Damn government. All they do is play wargames. They're all stupid.

And then it happened... the tubes opened... packets rushing through the

phone line like water through an internet connection. A VoIP pulse is

dialled out, an ACK packet is sent in. "This is it, this is where I b

elong... MySpace dot com.", "I know everyone here... even if I've never

met them, if I ever met them, they would be pedophiles from another city".

"I know you all..."

Damn podcasters. Tying up the tubes again. They're all alike.

You bet your micro we're all alike... we've been spoofing TV shows since

you were playing Half-Life 1. We've been dominated by Rev3, or ignored

by Apple. The few that had something to teach found us idling in #Hak5

on IRC.

This is our internet now... not some nuetral bullshit, the beauty of the

packet. We make use of a tracker already existing without paying for

what is overpriced. We click links.. and you call us criminals. We seek

free music... and you call us criminals. We exist without girlfriends,

without lives, without normal jobs. You hunt Afghans, destroy trade

centers, and wage war against terror. You cheat into office, and make

us believe it's for our own good.

Yes I am a pirate. My crime is that of piracy. My crime is that of

stealing MP3 files. My crime is that of filming movies in the movie

theatre. My crime is that of outsmarting Einstein.

I am an IPTV presenter, and this is my bullshit. You may stop this IPTV

show, but you can't stop Rev3... after all, they run Digg.

A F'N Men. This should be given to anyone entering a teacher university and maybe we wouldn't raise generation after generation of left behind kids grasping for a straw of human existence only to get the boot of life right in the face.

either way, you need to form thoughts better.

So, on the first page, you argue that you can't generalise about "hackers". Then, you argue that generalisations DO exist in relation to "hackers". So which one is it? Are they men or are they supermen?

Define hacker. The general public would define them as evil people who want to steal your megabytes. The Random House Unabridged Dictionary defines them as "a computer enthusiast". The hacker community has varying definitions of its own, including, but not limited to "someone who wants to know how something works".

While you're at it, define script kiddie. Someone who uses someone elses programs? Someone who runs exploits and then owns a box? Someone who uses something without knowing how it works? I've heard all three a LOT, and I'm fairly sure that makes 99.9% of people with access to a computer script kiddies.
