Is HAK5 dead?

I know this has been brought up before but is Hak5 dead?  I mean seriously?  When was the last time any of you watched a Hak5 video on youtube?  Threatwire is still somewhat active but is everything else dead?  If I'm missing something please let me know.  I miss the show and miss everything else with it.  If it is truely gone did I miss the goodbye?  If so please point me in the right direction cause I'd like some closure.  :)  Learned a lot from you guys and gals!  Plus is the show is truely dead then I can leave the forums too.  I try to help where I can but the forums these days are pretty much dead too.

First point I agree, threatwire is the only active show. I don't know why they don't make shows anymore. I always thought that they are working on new products, I don't know if that is true or not. If so, I would prefer having more hak5 shows and less new products ( nothing against new products, I just love the hak shows ).

Second post I disagree. The forum isn't dead at all. Almost everyday there are new topics / responds to topics. Some sections are more active than others. The most active sections are the Pineapple nano, bash bunny and rubber ducky ( personal experience), the least active is the Plunder Bug. I visit the forum minimum twice a day. I don't how it was 3 years ago, as I joined early 2019 (a bit more than a year), but I hate it when people say that something is dead when it isn't.

Anyways, I would also like to hear a statement or a response from one of the Hak5 team.

Kuyaya I get your statement about the forums.  But back in the day there was the wifi pineapple and the rubber ducky.  That's it.  Pineapple always had a good following.  Same with the rubber ducky but out of that came the lan turtle, bash bunny, and packet squirrel.  (That's the extent of what I own.)  And those forums were booming back in their day.  All the new stuff it just seems like, at least in the forums, that the following isn't as large.  Just my take on it.  I like you visit the forums several times a day and my only point was that I miss the old days.  There was just a lot more going on back then.

I'm treating it as if it is. Everything relating to YouTube output seemed to pretty much grind to a halt after the move to Oakland. Then Tekthing went and Threatwire seems to be an independant production supported by Patreon donations. Does Shannon even use the Hak5 studio any more? (Actually even Darren doesn't when he advertises another product). There was a promise a while back that there would be new output and a year or so ago a new format was tested but nothing came of it. I stopped subscribing on YouTube a while back, although looking at it, subscriber numbers appear to still be going up. I have no idea why. Maybe people are reading about the kit, buying it and then subscribing. I only return to the forums because occasionaly a useful "nugget" of information comes up, but more and more it is "I want hack mentor", "How do I hack", "Have I been hacked", "why does <insert product here> not work" posts. If there was a button to close my forum account I probably would have pressed it. I guess they are making enough money from shifting kit to not have to worry about YouTube.

True. Why did they even stop making the Hak5 shows?? It's too sad to be true.

Second point I also agree. There aren't many good posts nowadays. I think it's also a shame that they have payloads in their github repository who doesn't work. I mean, those are not made from hak5, but why don't they just take them out? Better a smaller repository where every payload works than a bigger where only some work. I try to make payloads where everyone can help improve, give new ideas and work on it to make it better, but I have a feeling like nobody is interested and I find that very sad. The only one who helped a bit was Bob123 on the Respashes payload. Most of the posts are just "<payload name> doesn't work, help me" without even a real description of the problem. But I'm optimistic. I think that when the Hak5 shows come back, interest and good discussions will also come back (to the forum). I would really love to hear a response from Darren. And not a response like "we're coming back soon" or "we're working on new products, expect us coming back". I mean a real statement. I think we deserve that.

I don't think they will. Whilst Hak5 has been off-air YouTube has cracked down on anything they consider to be teaching / promoting "hacking". This would cover pen-testing, which is basically the same thing but with a "different coloured hat". So if Hak5 wanted to go back to more instructional videos it could face being shut down. I suppose this ban could even cover videos demonstrating how to use some Hak5 products. An option is to follow Null Byte's lead and post trailers on YouTube but host the full video on their own site, but then they lose any YouTube ad revenue. I can't see Hak5 engaging in anything that does not generate money, it is a for-profit business after all. I would like to be wrong about this but after all this time I just can't see it happening.

You're right. I also think patreon wouldn't be an option, that wouldn't create as much money as they would need. But there has to be a way....

Possibly, but that assumes Hak5 actually wants to continue.

Hm, you think that they don't want to do it anymore, even when they could?

No idea. Just haven't seen much evidence of it over the past year. Remains to be seen what, if anything, happens.

Yeah, would be good to get some clarity......but the Threat Wire and Shannon Morse are still showing via Hak5 on youtube, so all a bit strange.......

I thought shannon doesn't work anymore with Hak5. She still continues Threatwire but she wouldn't participate in the shows (as far as I remember). Maybe she get a bit more views on the Hak5 channel.

I have to say, i also have noticed the decline in new content, and feel a little sad, i really miss the show.

But, on that note, i actually worry more about the crew, if they are okay, doing good and hopefully are busy with day to day life and work 🙂

But, producing digital content / media content IS a lot of work. A good crew, can produce 45 minuttes of content in 7 working days. Lets remember that Darren, Snubs and the rest, did all this, because their hearts burned for it, they believed in it. So, i think it's fair they take some time off, they deserve it more than anyone.
Maybe, it could be time for someone else to carry the torch, make new content, and ask H5 to just distribute it, if they want. Anyone willing to step up to the plate ?

But, lets face it. Researching "hacking", and being public about it, are hard times. I ran my own little research shop, and my own small infrastructure, focusing on Kali, lockpicking, alarmsystems and CCTV.

I just shut down shop, because it was giving me problems, so as a "hacker", these are not good times. I believe its important to share knowledge, to do what we can to inform the public, but right now, i'm thinking "why bother".

All my best, to the entire Hak5 crew, past and present, and thanks for being there, for everythng you did, and still do.
It's very much appreciated 🙂

Sorry, for any misspelling, im Danish 🙂

I'm thinking right now. IF someone would pick up the torch, and make new video content. It would maybe have to be hosted on private servers. Thats why it aint gonna happen.
First of all, it's not easy to find a hosting provider that allow it due to bandwith usage There's the first problem..

Second, video / audio takes a shitload of space. I'm working as a sound engineer for a local church. Recording 32 Audio tracks, with a service that lasts two hours, takes up 50 GB  space on my laptop. It's nothing compared to video.

So, if someone would try to carry on, hosted on private servers, it would cost and arm and a leg to do it. As I see it, it would be the only way, but maybe some of the H5 crew could pitch in, and give their thoughts. But, as I see it, hosting on "ordinary open sites, is simply not an option any more"

The problem is that, people are scared of "hackers", be it bad or good. They dont see there's a difference between white, grey or black. Society think it's the same.
Luckily for me, i've found a boss thats not like that. I can work from the office, at home, and work on what I want, so it's a small dream come true 🙂

He  allows me to "hack", and do strange experiments, with permission of course, so I find myself to be a very lucky man. I just hope, everyone is just as fortunate 🙂

I totally agree with you. Nicely said again 🙂

A bit off topic:

Nice that you have a cool boss like that. I'm studying so it's a bit different in my case. I once asked the administration if I could make a "pentest" (not really a pentest in my opinion, that's why it's in ""). I would set the Wifi Pineapple somewhere on the campus where the most people are and would let it run for 7 days. I would name it "KF-Campus" (the ssid of our real campus wlan) and the captive portal would also look the same as on the normal KF-Campus (obviously, it would be an evil portal). So there wouldn't be a difference, there would just be 2 KF-Campus. Anyways, they didn't allow it 😢.

I haven't had a chance to read this entire thread but I can respond to the OP and say, absolutely not, Hak5 is very much alive.

I understand that we haven't put out many of our regular videos lately. Personally I've been taking a bit of a hiatus to restructure some things in my life that needed attention.

With that said we have a lot of great programming right around the corner coming to the channel - some familiar faces, some new faces, and some fantastic shows all around. Stay tuned for a channel teaser in the next few weeks.

Thanks Darren I'm looking forward to it!  Also if there's any chance that either on here or through a video that you could give us an update on pretty much everything that would be great.  I'd be interested to know what happened to Tekthing, where it's going or if it's coming back.  Anything new from Mubix.  I've heard some people say you've all moved.  Not asking for anything too personal from everyone but I've been watching Hak5 since the beginning so any updates would be greatly appreciated.  I do miss that weekly dose of technolust!
