opkg update error

Recommended Posts

opkg update has an error, not being able to download anything at this custom update URL:

root@shark:~# opkg update
Downloading http://downloads.hak5.org/packages/shark/1907/Packages.gz
*** Failed to download the package list from http://downloads.hak5.org/packages/shark/1907/Packages.gz

I looked at that URL and I get a 404 error. What is supposed to be there?

Yes, I am connected to the internet. The rest of the opkg update completes fine.

Here is the full output, hope that helps:

I have the same issue, but also can't install any packages. Shark Jack has internet access. I tried nano and curl with the same result:

root@shark:/etc/opkg# opkg -V2 install curl

Have you tried

opkg update

I did with the same results as you in your original post.

On a whim I manually upgraded the firmware to the latest version again (was already on 1.1.0) and opkg upgrade produced the same error as before except installing other packages (nano, curl, ...) now works. I have no idea what changed, since I literally just repeated what I did before.

I just wanted to point out that this is still an issue - the Hak5 Shark Jack package repository remains unavailable.  Is this intended?

Yes. This is still the case, just ignore the error from Hak5's Repo for the moment. All other repo's sync fine.

... still broken, but I wonder why i see this double "//" at the end of the link. When opening with Firefox, I can download the package (with both "/" single and "//" double) but not with wget:

root@shark:~# wget http://downloads.hak5.org/packages/shark/1907//Packages.gz

The issue is probably the redirect from the original link to https and then to googleapis.com:

http://downloads.hak5.org/packages/shark/1907/Packages.gz -> (307 Internal Redirect (HSTS)) or (302 with wget on ubuntu): https://downloads.hak5.org/packages/shark/1907/Packages.gz

When is this going to be solved? It's almost to the day one year ago that this thread was created (with a following promise to solve it), but I still get the Hak5 repo error when running opkg update on the Shark. Perhaps the Shark is out of development so that the Hak5 repo is of no relevance any longer.

I love the SharkJack, but I ended up setting up a dev env for it and made a custom openwrt kernel + modules, which has extended the capabilities.

I have often wondered if that bad repo is actually doing it's job as intended.  It would be a low key way of collecting stats on Shark Jack usage... IP + DTS in the logs of that web server... of course geolocation could easily be extracted.  Then the IPs could be paired with the user logs of this forum and/or the hak5 web store server logs to match a user.  Then this data could be fed into marketing, etc.

Now I guess it's time; I'm a new user of the SharkJack and I have exactly the same problem. And that in May 2021! Are you serios @Hak5? 😅

Sad.

EDIT:

Really? The Packages-list only contains a Fake-Package?

Package: fakepackage
Version: 1.0
Depends: libc
Section: libs
Architecture: mips_24kc
Installed-Size: 1
Filename: fakepackage.ipk
Size: 1
SHA256sum: 136b28f8a6a0c99f579e9b1d0dab069000ee404bdcc832574a83180ba6973e92
Description: Fake Package.

For anyone who has problems with this in the future:

Just uncomment the second line in the file "/etc/opkg/customfeeds.conf" and you are good to go.

The Shark Jack w/v1.1.0 firmaware is running OpenWRT 18.06-SNAPSHOT r0+7850-fb83a51832 according to /etc/openwrt_release, which is "Old Release". The package list is here, and the SJ should be able to handle anything there is a mipsel_24kc family package for. The Hak5 repository would be for the few Hak5 specific tools, like LED, BATTERY, etc. so we really aren't missing much. Just comment out the second line in /etc/opkg/customfeeds.conf like @StrangePanda said and fuggedaboutit.

August 2021 and still no solution? Hak5 what is going on??

I enjoy the products released over the years, but lets be honest quality has never been super, all products are buggy since release and most bugs don't get patched,

simple issues like this remain open, and general support is lacking.

I am sorry to say but my fanboy feelings for Hak5 are at an all time low.

Thanks @Henkka22, that got the distro repo links working again for me!

To get the Hak5 repo working again requires a little fussing... the OpenWRT wget on Shark Jack doesn't support TLS. Once you've got the basic distro repos working again (and can opkg update them), you need to also run the following commands:

opkg install ca-bundle
opkg install ca-certificates
opkg install libustream-mbedtls

This let me get the Hak5 repo working again too. (I spent waaaaaay too long diagnosign why wolfssl didn't work before uninstalling it and going with mbedtls.)
