Does anyone know if there is anything simple inside that I could use to tell if WiFi is on or off? I'm looking at situation where I absolutely, positively cannot do any emissions.

Was thinking perhaps hooking a small LED indicator. The display LEDs seem to have a mind of their own..

Red On = Monitor mode interface for wlan1 is up, Blue On = wlan0 is up. Opposites mean that the respective interface is down.

To bring up wlan0 over SSH type "wifi". To bring up the wlan1mon interface, do "ifconfig wlan1 up && airmon-ng start wlan1".
