Bar Codes

Recommended Posts

Ok i work at one of the biggest retailers in the us. Now I was playing around with a fabrics scaner and scaned the bar code on my name tag.

I continued to print out the tag and noticed that the barcode replicated my SSN on to the ticket.

My question when it comes to a barcode, will all bar code readers read the same. For example say if I purchase one off of web retailer and scan my tag will that also reproduce the same effects.

I see this as a security threat. atleast to my own personal data.

Since I have lost a couple of badges in the past.

Yes any barcode reader/scanner will read the same thing, assuming that the reader can understand that type of barcode (there are many different types).

Great resource...

However I should point out that most simple barcodes are generally code 39 (the kind that is on most store id cards). All barcodes have the same basic concept: The white areas is what the laser actually looks for (light bounces back to the laser).

I've looked at that but the magstripe readers no longer seem to be listed on either Jameco or Digikey's sites. Know of any other suppliers?

Ok, I finally found one on ebay... actually quite cheap ($5 incl. shipping). Now I just have to figure out a USB interface for it. I'm kind of tempted to hack it together with a simple gameport-usb converter, but I don't know how well those would work under Linux.
