Sparda
Any distro should work, plug the hard drive in, select to install on to that hard drive when installing, done.
VaKo
Might not work if you move it between systems though. Or is it only windows that is tied to the hardware its installed on?
Freakish
I'm thinking about using Debian. Another question, when I install Debian will it format my drive? I have about 100gigs that I don't want to lose.

Ye, that's windows. Well, stuff like xorg configurations probably won't work, but the system will actually boot, unlike windows which will just give up and die with a blue screen. maddog
In order for you to be able to boot off of the external drive, you must make sure that your motherboard supports booting from a USB/Firewire device. In addition you must make sure that the external device is loaded before the internal disk by the motherboard, otherwise, Windows will boot anyway.
