Systematic issues with my Nano

I seem to be having a general case of "failure to launch" at the moment. My Nano is working great for recon, but it is consistently failing to do anything related to acting as a wireless AP.

I cannot connect to the open AP, the management AP, or any of the spoofed APs produced by PineAP. My phone almost instantly gives up and marks the networks as "Disabled", or just stops and leaves it marked as "Saved". My laptop won't connect to them, either. Signal strength is fine. I'll occasionally see associations occurring for the PineAP SSIDs, but they either immediately result in deassociation, or my phone just abandons it without a trace in the logs.

I upgraded to 1.1.3 today, and have already tried a factory reset and a firmware recovery - so now I'm on 1.1.1.

I am having an issue with DNS resolution on the device - I had to manually add my campus's name servers to /etc/resolv.conf to let the device ping websites by name, rather than IP. I'm not sure this is relevant, though!

Does anyone have suggestions for where to proceed from here? This is quite frustrating!

how are you powering the nano? it needs a 5v2a power supply to function properly.  While 5v1a works and powers it on, it will make the nano act funny because its not getting all the power it needs.  hope this helps.

Thanks - I actually thought of that last night, and realized I should have both ends of that Y-cable plugged in. A while later, it began working out of blue..so I'm not sure if there was any correlation!

However, whilst messing around with it just now, it started malfunctioning again. I've tried both plugging both male ends into my laptop's 3.0 ports, as well as connecting one to the laptop and one to a Pineapple Juice battery. It's gone back to immediately rejecting my connections.

dmesg in Linux shows this happening over and over:

[ 2008.287696] wlp3s0: authenticate with 00:c0:ca:90:94:80
[ 2008.290799] wlp3s0: send auth to 00:c0:ca:90:94:80 (try 1/3)
[ 2008.296777] wlp3s0: authenticated
[ 2008.297178] wlp3s0: associate with 00:c0:ca:90:94:80 (try 1/3)
[ 2008.297767] wlp3s0: deauthenticated from 00:c0:ca:90:94:80 while associating (Reason: 3=DEAUTH_LEAVING)

It seems like my laptop is deciding, on its end, to give up on the connection. My phone originally labeled the AP with "No Internet Connection" when it started going wrong, and now just goes between "Saved" and "Disabled".

There was also a single of these, oddly:

[ 3319.144641] wlp3s0: deauthenticated from 00:c0:ca:90:94:80 while associating (Reason: 6=CLASS2_FRAME_FROM_NONAUTH_STA)

The management AP is giving "denied association" errors, whether or not I enter the correct password.

I've double-checked that I have my filters set to Allow and with the MACs for my laptop and phone's wireless devices plugged in.

Plugging the Pineapple directly into the battery gives similar results.

dmesg on the Pineapple is showing some disk read errors, which does line up with the suggestion about power issues - I saw similar data loss and disk corruption on my Pi when I attached it to a weak power supply. I'm curious if it could be getting its brains scrambled by exposure to bad power, and then getting into a bad state until I reflash the thing.

Sorry for the double post - don't see an Edit button anywhere :(

logread on the Pineapple looks like this. I'm trying to hit a PineAP SSID, then the management SSID, from first my phone, and then my laptop.

I also tried setting the password for the management AP to a bogus value - which, interestingly, still resulted in "authenticated".

I'm going to try reflashing the thing again in a minute - it may just be that I'm breaking stuff with a poor power supply in all the wonderful ways that can happen!

do you have ICS for the pineapple.  I did some testing on mine today with my android phone and no ICS to see what it will do. Every time i connected, it asked me if i wanted to stay connected to the AP knowning it didnt have a connection to the internet.  If i hit "no" it would automatically disassociate with the AP.  Im running android 7.1.1

Yes, and I could ping IP addresses from my connected phone. However, no DNS resolution was occurring, so the phone thought it had no access.

Now it just won't connect whatsoever.

Good news! I decided to just hook it up to both ports of one of my monstrous power bricks, and now it's working like a charm.

I suspect my laptop started out putting out just enough juice on the USB ports - but once I unplugged it and drained the battery a little, it backed off, and the Pineapple went into a tailspin of Weird Power ProblemsTM

Thank you for getting me pointed in the right direction :)
