The WIFI Pineapples

I was going to buy a wifi pineapple nano or nano tactical and the book, I was wondering what are the differences between all the pineapple's (Nano Basic, Nano Tactical, Tactical Elite, Tertra basic and Tertra Tactical) which one of the five I should get?

How many devices can connect to the different pines (iphones,android, windows pc, linux, macs)?

Also is the pineapple book necessary?

This also might be a bit of a stupid question probably is but you need to connect it to a computer to code it and stuff you cant do it by the phone(Yes very stupid question)?

Hi Jsync:

In my case I have both and use both, but I am becoming vey fond of the Tetra.  I like the tactical option because it gives you all the extra gear plus the backpack which I really like.  The book is helpful if you are new.  That said, if you research the forums and have a good Wi-Fi base you can get by without it.   You will need an Internet connection to provide connectivity to clients and you need a source to connect and configure.  I use both Linux and Windows without any issues, never used a phone.

The Tetra is very powerful and does both 2.4 and 5 frequencies.  The Nano is smaller and only does 2.4

One last word of caution to set your expectations.    You will need Wi-Fi understanding to use the Pineapple, it is not as easy as plug it in and own everything.   It seems there are people who buy a pineapple and have unrealistic expectations.

The Nano is 2.4ghz only and the Tetra is 2.4ghz and 5ghz range.  The difference between basic editions and tactical editions is the basic is just the device and what comes in the box.  The tactical editions come with extra goodies like a case or bag, the nano come with a battery, etc.  

I have a nano and and looking at getting a tetra because of the 5ghz capability.  The nano is compact and portable where as the tetra is bigger and takes more to power if going mobile.  

 

Anything that can connect to wifi can connect to the pineapple.  To control it, any computer, tablet, or phone.

 

The pineapple book would probably be a good read to fully understand the device and get the most out of it, but not necessary

Dont know exactly I wanna make it have openvpn so me and my friends will be able to use the vpn at school

it would be able to handle that. depending on how many and since its a small device the range might not be the greatest if your all spread out.  Good idea!

I use it for openvpn too.  It's a real easy setup.  I've made scripts to initiate the vpn session when needed.

installing openvpn on the nano is a little different than the Mark V.  opkg update.  then opkg install openvpn-openssl

It is great to be able to make a secure session when needed, say at a coffee bar or other public wifi.

If I was to get a tetra we would be able to be a bit spread out around our school (its really small) but with the nano that might not be possible

you would also have to have it connected to an internet connection of some kind for openvpn to work so how are you connecting and the tetra sucks a lot of power if your going to use batterys to power it

We are going to be using the schools internet but power isnt that much of a problem do you reckon a nano could sustain a maximum of 8-10 devices

Please remember that the WiFi Pineapple NANO is not built to be a WiFi Repeater. Depending on how you share internet to the Pineapple, you will get slowdowns - especially if tunneling 8-10 connections through a VPN.

The advantage the TETRA has here, is that it can join an AP on 2.4 GHz, and broadcast a 5GHz network (or vice versa), therefore getting very decent bandwidth.

Would I be able to make the pine only allow access to specific devices so lets say there is 20 of us in a room would I be able to make so only 4 people had access to the pines vpn?

Also is it possible to add a USB WiFi adaptor to the pine that has 2.4 and 5 GHz network access?

I really considering getting the nano because it small and with all my books and stuff it would be a huge struggle to even imagine fitting a tetra into my school bag.

Yes, you can set up MAC address filters. The behavior and setup depends on a few different factors. Let me reiterate: The WiFi Pineapple is not designed to be a personal hotspot out of the box. While you can do what you are asking, it requires manual configuration.

Im using a netgear A6210 but it requires an installation could this be used for 2.4 and 5GHz network connection?

Also I just checked the hackshop to see how much it was to order a nano since I live in Australia and due to the usd to aud money conversion I new I had to spend a bit more money but I typed in my address but for some reason I cant order it in Australia i have tried 3 addresses and none of them allow me to buy within Australia yet i can buy a duck, turtle or any accessory but not a pineapple?

the book is not necessary at all, i bought it expecting some tutorial, but its just a Instruction manual, "how to turn ON" etc etc. Basically describes the menu items.

get the nano, the cheapest version $99 and get the antennas,usb wlan and  EDC Case on ebay, wayyyyy more cheaper.

Couldn't agree more, i saw at the forum  many teenager trying to play with the nano at school  after watching a MR Robot episode with unrealistic expectations.

That is unusual i have tried multiple addresses and none of them allow me to buy the pine but i can buy anything else on the hakshop

That seems strange, I received my last week.  Delivered to a residential address through DHL and delivered by Austpost.
