Nano in standalone mode

How do I use the Nano by itself, not connected to a laptop? I am just trying to use it in passive mode (listening). I put an SD card into the Nano and formatted it. Then chose my options in PineAP and saved them. After that I connected the Nano to a battery pack. It booted up fine (solid blue light), and it was broadcasting it AP with a very strong signal, but it did not collect any SSIDs in the pool.

When the Nano is connected to the laptop, scanning is started by choosing a scanning interval and clicking on "scan". How is scanning started and maintained when the Nano is connected only to a battery pack?
