Hi all, i was given a 'Long Range WiFi Holiday Bundle' for Christmas by a relative, from the Hak5 shop. I was mostly just after a new adapter with the Ralink chipset, but since this bundle came with the Yagi antenna, i'm keen to try it out.

However, the bundle didn't appear to come with an adapter that will allow me to connect the antenna to the wireless adapter, as both ends are male, and the single adapter that came with the bundle also has both ends male..

Was this adapter supposed to be female on both ends? Because that is the only way that i can see it allowing me to connect the Yagi, and currently it seems like the adapter with both it's male ends doesn't allow me to connect anything in the bundle that doesn't already connect with it's own connection, so i'm not sure what i would actually use this adapter for...

Thanks for any help you guys can give me

The adapter in your link looks like the one that came with the bundle, but i still don't understand how that can connect the antenna to anything... The antenna has a male pin and the Alfa AWUS036NEH has a male pin, it seems like i need an adapter that is female on both ends to connect the two...

Just try to screw it on :) Yes this kind of antenna connector might seem weird at first but it's awesome once you realize!

EDIT: Actually inspect it closely first and make sure one sticks inward (even though it has the pin) and seems like it'll fit the other one

It's SMA and RP-SMA (reverse polarity SMA) it's a form of coaxial for precision connections.

When you unscrew the default antenna, doesn't it look like the same connector as your new yagi?

I have the Alfa NHA and it connects to my RP-SMA yagi just fine :D

I took 2 photos to show the dilemma i'm having, i tried my best to get the connectors visible in both shots, but basically you can see the Yagi antenna cable in both photos, and the supplied adapter with each end in each photo

As you can see, the connector would fit correctly but it seems that i need it to be a female SMA to male RPSMA, whereas i appear to have an adapter that is the other way around, with a male SMA to female RPSMA connection (based on my quick googling of SMA/RPSMA connectors)...

As a new user i'm limited to 3 posts a day, so from here on i will go quiet until tomorrow, but thanks for the replies already guys and i hope to get some more input on my problem, see you all soon.

I think the yagi is designed more to transmit a signal not so much to receive. It fits perfect on my pineapples connectors and on another router i have. The other devices are more designed to receive signal i think, but getting that female adapter would probably work fine.

Thanks for the replies everyone, yeah it seems like i need that adapter, i'll pick one up.

Regarding the Yagi being designed more to transmit than receive, i'll have to lookup some threads on what people actually use the Yagi for and how they use it

I just thought it was strange that the bundle came with an adapter that seems basically useless for anything that's actually in the bundle, i thought maybe they sent the wrong one, or there was supposed to be a 2nd adapter which was the opposite of the one in my photos, also on the shop page for the bundle, it lists "SMA to RP-SMA adapters", adapters being plural, which also made me wonder if i was in fact missing a 2nd adapter...

I'd be interested to hear from anyone who actually bought that bundle, as to whether or not they only got the same single adapter that i did

You can use a yagi on both ends of a long range link. You may have gotten the wrong adapter. I've had that happen with another vendor before, wrong part got put in the wrong bin and when they grabbed a handful of parts, one was wrong.

yea after i posted i was like duh a router would be transmitting and receiving...

i got the same bundle and it did only have the single connector female to male, i wasn't sure what i'd use it for either and was more interested in having a second yagi for my pines and the long range booster for other things

I also didn't get it with the right connector but I bought my set 2nd hand so don't know how it was shipped originally. Just buy one ;)

I beg to differ! Sure it probably has more power to push your radio waves out, then to pull far signals to you, (unless you do like barry and also have a yagi at the other end also) however I've had good success with even just a moderate yagi! With just having it at one end, it still is noticeably much much better! For example instead of dropping out all the time, and having a poor connection and with even having to place the adapter in just the perfect spot hanging off the ceiling or mounted to the wall with the factory 5dbm antenna pointed in just the right way. You can have a good/great connection with a single yagi pointed in the right direction and rarely drop out!

Thank you Mr. Yagi and Mr. Uda!! lol
