Questions about USB Tethering

There you go... we've 1 compatible phone. Is your Nexus unlocked?

thx

Phones I have personally tested with a carrier that doesn't care about tethering:

Nexus 6p, nexus 6, galaxy note 3, nexus 5, nexus 5x, Samsungs latest edge phone.

Please keep in mind that usually you can also do WiFi -> USB tethering which will work great.. If it's not locked in the firmware, which some vendors do.

Either way, you can of course still manage your WiFi Pineapple over WiFi if tethering does not work. If tethering works but the app is stuck and cannot detect it, or cannot detect the WiFi Pineapple, then its possible the vendor / telco has made some changes which we don't anticipate in our app.

I'll release an update for the app hopefully fixing the "waiting for WiFi Pineapple" in the future, but I do not have an ETA.

Best regards,

Sebkinne

Ok so now it depends on: The model of the phone, the Android version and the carrier.

Conclusion, If you are able to tether, then you're pretty lucky then.

Still just Android version and Carrier.

Model doesn't matter so much. Carriers typically have custom builds of Android they modify. Even the Moto X Pure is not running a straight Google build of Android. Then it comes down to the carrier network allowing it.

Thanks for ll the input guys.

I just think that there are too many obstacles just to get the tethering going. Hopefully it's a firmware update away from being resolved. Of course, the best solution would be to have a mobile broadband infusion (like the mkv) so as to use 3g/4g dongles.

Time will tell.

It's from Google, so no.

I can tell you right now, if it's a recent Samsung phone on At$t or Verizon, it's not going to work. They want $$$ for you to use the data you are already paying for to work on anything else. They've also got it locked down so you can't reflash to another rom, you get a brick, and not a soft brick like most people think of.

I used to use my nexus 7 wifi with my nano. It's just a weird thing to share an already borrowed wifi. Can't use marshmallow. Gotta use 5.1.1 and then the settings will have a USB tether option to enable. You won't be able to get the ip unless you connect with another device to the management interface and then ssh to the nano to run an ifconfig. That will tell you the ip your tablet assigned the nano. Made my life so much easier getting a galaxy s7 on its own line.

Depends on the definition of "Unlocked". New Nexus devices work on all the major carriers so not "locked" to a carrier. But the boot loader is locked which means you have to unlock it to root. It's a pretty simple process with TWRP.

Mine is 6P with Verizon and works. I think there was an FCC ruling on tethering that they can't charge you to tether. But I know Verizon allows it. Most big companies will.

Try Hotspot Manager from the app store. You can use the App to check for clients connected to your nexus 7 device with the ip it has assigned to it. You can also make your AP through the App but i've never done that. Either edit the wireless file to auto connect wlanx to that AP or setup in the interface to.

Okay so I made it to this steep and I hit a new wall lol. So do I need openssl install to run the easytether program? If so can someone show steps on how to install openssl. They skip over the steeps on install openssl in the Hack5 video and in this blog post.

root@Pineapple:/sd/18.06.0/ar71xx/generic# opkg install easytether-usb-openssl_0.8.9-2_mips_24kc.ipk --dest sd

Package easytether-usb-openssl (0.8.9-3) installed in sd is up to date.

root@Pineapple:/sd/18.06.0/ar71xx/generic# easytether-usb

So I am trying to get my phone to be able to tether to my Pineapple and I found an old video on the Hak5 Youtube that they explain it and they mention an app 'EasyTether Pro'. I would like to give it a shot on my LG G8, but $10 just to see if something works isn't something that sits ok with me. So does anyone know if the apps works with the carrier 'Sprint'?
