I just wanted to understand whetther this could be used as a client to connect to public network (airport, starbucks etc) ? and the my client(ipad/ laptop) can connect to the pineapple and access the internet

Also is there a provision or need to install any IDS or IPS utiity on the pineapple?

there should be a full blown router/firewall infusion/interface for the entire backend of the pineapple.

connect your pineapple using wlan1 or eth0 to any access point/interwebz connection. then just connect to it like you would any other router or wifi connection and you should be golden.
