Too short notice for me. Looks interesting.

Anything labelled "how we spent a year turning a caravan into a spaceship" just screams 'awesome' at me. :-)

I've got my sights set on BruCon this october.

BruCon is tempting and I know a few people who go most years, so I might try and hit that as its only a short flight and train ride away.

I've never met anyone on here, but tempted to do Steelcon if I can get the Friday off. Do people do the whole three days?

Well, I believe friday is a pre-con evening social (at your own expense) and sunday is a post-con chill-out with laser gaming provided after which you can hang around in Sheffield to your heart's content (as described here).

I'll be around for the lot, but if you don't feel like doing so just go for the main event which is saturday. Maybe DigiNinja can comment on the turnout he experienced last year?

I'm sort-of planning on going next year. Can't make it work for me this year.

I truly *love* how they have already announced when the next *two* DefCons will be. Gives you a chance to plan ahead.

I've been a fair few times, I'll hit this one as well, although I don't really attend many talks, mostly hang around the villages with friends and drink 24/7

Last year was my fist time, it was so packed, it was nearly impossible to get to any talks or the villages, I managed a few but mostly drank and just walked around, didn't know anyone because none of my friends are into that stuff. I know this year they got a bigger venue so hopefully it will be easier to participate. If anyone is interested we should plan something and meet up.

That would be my big fear wrt going to something like this: I hardly know anybody that also goes and I'm not the type of person to quickly strike up a conversation with a stranger right out of the blue. Apparently the folks at DefCon try to organise events such that you're almost forced to interact with strangers, like if you want to solve the badge challenge you're going to have to talk to someone who has a badge different from the one you have, that sort of thing. Not being able to get into a talk you're interested in would suck hard though as that's the part that makes me want to head out there in the first place.

Nope. In fact, I haven't gone to a single con before this year.

Just go early, stop at a supermarket and pick up meat and such and hit the the Toxic BBQ. Normally a few people who love grilling doing the cooking, everyone is super friendly and its a smaller group to socialise with, it also tends to be the best way to get invited to all the parties.

I won a ticket to the blackhat sessions in thr Netherlands June 18th.

Lucky me I still can't believe it!!

Anyone else going?

Sheesh. That's held so close to my home, when I flush my toilet they can hear it.

But not me, sorry. Looking over the talks scheduled and the cost involved I don't think this one's right for me. Particularly the closing keynote looks pretty interesting though.

Yeah I wouldn't be going if it wasn't a free ticket. I AM grateful for the opportunity but reviewing last year's video impression it looks very fancy (shirts) and I'd rather attend a more casual meeting where I can wear my no-I-will-not-fix-your-computer t-shirt. Also I've never been to any con before and think it's a teeny tiny bit out of my league :P

I see people volunteer for an avent think that's a great idea, you'll have a specific purpose and it's great to get to know people!

Oh man I only just spotted this thread and heard about SteelCon, HOURS after I've booked a holiday over the same dates. And it would've been so handy to pop over from Manchester.

Ah well, there's always next year!

Any other decent cons in the UK? Have considered DerbyCon and Shmoo in the past but it always works out so pricey with flights and hotels. Plus like you guys said, it sounds a little lonely when none of your friends are interested in coming..

Dayum, how many bsides are there?

There are an insane amount, surprising even in small places where you think it wouldn't be able to support a security conference.
