Hey guys, I have some questions about how well this may work.

I would like to try putting pinapple frimware on a wrt54g dd-wrt router (old and unlocked). I wan't to do this to try it out before I buy a pinapple. However, I need to know if:

The pinapple firmware run on top of OpenWrt or is it a vertion itself?

Would 2.1.1 be a working build for a wrt54g?

is there any other reason this would fail!?

I hope that these questions are reasonable, cheers!

They run different hardware specs. The Mark V was/is custom designed for Karma and WiFi radio support. The one major difference is the Mark V has two internal radios. The WRT54G only has one. I'm sure if you spent enough time you could cross compile it or branch it off, but it wouldn't be fully functional.
