Nexuscrazy
Hi, I'm new here so first of Hi to everyone.Yesterday I unplugged my charger and plugged it in somewhere else but there was no lights on my Pineapple, I checked the charger and there was no output. I rooted through my box of old chargers and found a 9v 200ma charger, I plugged it in and the lights came on, I was so relieved. But when I tried to connect i was having problems connecting to the default access point (Pineapple5_24B7). I can connect the Pineapple to my WiFi in client modeI can ssh in I can connect by Ethernet I can restore to factory settings. The 2 things that I cant get to work are the access point which is created but when I try to connect to it from my laptop it times out. I also had an alpha WiFi adapter plugged in by USB but for some reason in WiFi manager I clicked on remove config thinking it would reset when I plugged it back in but now it wont accept the USB adapter.I have syslogs as well as Dmesg plus a clip from SSH window. I'll include the logs bellow in the hope someone can help me get it working fully again. Many many thanks in advance.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Dmesg Output: [ 0.000000] Linux version 3.3.8 (sebkinne@WorkstationMeltdown) (gcc version 4.6.3 20120201 (prerelease) (Linaro GCC 4.6-2012.02) ) #38 Sun Sep 7 16:40:01 CEST 2014[ 0.000000] MyLoader: sysp=97d936c9, boardp=61b798de, parts=6238a85e[ 0.000000] bootconsole [early0] enabled[ 0.000000] CPU revision is: 00019374 (MIPS 24Kc)[ 0.000000] SoC: Atheros AR9330 rev 1[ 0.000000] Clocks: CPU:400.000MHz, DDR:400.000MHz, AHB:200.000MHz, Ref:25.000MHz[ 0.000000] Determined physical RAM map:[ 0.000000] memory: 04000000 @ 00000000 (usable)[ 0.000000] Initrd not found or empty - disabling initrd[ 0.000000] Zone PFN ranges:[ 0.000000] Normal 0x00000000 -> 0x00004000[ 0.000000] Movable zone start PFN for each node[ 0.000000] Early memory PFN ranges[ 0.000000] 0: 0x00000000 -> 0x00004000[ 0.000000] On node 0 totalpages: 16384[ 0.000000] free_area_init_node: node 0, pgdat 802d8470, node_mem_map 81000000[ 0.000000] Normal zone: 128 pages used for memmap[ 0.000000] Normal zone: 0 pages reserved[ 0.000000] Normal zone: 16256 pages, LIFO batch:3[ 0.000000] pcpu-alloc: s0 r0 d32768 u32768 alloc=1*32768[ 0.000000] pcpu-alloc: [0] 0[ 0.000000] Built 1 zonelists in Zone order, mobility grouping on. Mr.miYagi
As far as i know, you need at least 1A output. So maybe you suffer of malfunction because of low power. The shipped power supply is known for getting defective.
barry99705
The power supply I use for mine is 12v at 1amp. Off an old Linksys access point. No clue where the one that came with the pineapple went. It's here, somewhere, in a box.
Sebkinne
200ma on a 9V is way way way too low. You want either 5V 2A, 9V 1A, or 12V 1A. Best regards, Sebkinne
Nexuscrazy
[ Fixed ] Yeah it was down to the power supply, I had 2 chargers 1 was 9 volt at 2 amps and the other 9 volts at 1 amp, however after checking them one was throwing out 14 volts and the other just over 13 volts, I've been out and bought a multi charger and set it to 9 volts 1.7 amps and now all is back to normal. Strange I could understand not putting enough volts through causing things to shut down but putting 14 volts through I would of thought would of either blown it or just worked. A word of caution. Just because a charger says 9 volts doesn't mean its putting 9 volts out , well at least that was the case with 2 chargers I had knocking about. Nexuscrazy
When I say 1 amp and 2 amp it says 100ma and 200ma which I thought meant 1 amp and 2 amp, me bad, I'll research more next time but I'm happy now, Hak5 really need an outlet in the UK, It would make buying there products and replacement parts so much easier. Thanks everyone for the info. Marc
Nexuscrazy
The current I in milliamps (mA) is equal to the current I in amps (A) times 1000 milliamps per amp: I(mA) = I(A) × 1000mA/A. Now I see where I went wrong.
Nexuscrazy
I've got the choice with this new charger of 7.5 volt - 2 amps 9 volt - 1.7 amps 12 volt - 1.7 amps 13.2 volts - 1.5 amps What would be the best to go with? I'm using 9 volts 1.7 amp at the moment and all is working fine. Thanks

Darren Kitchen
W = A(V) MK5 accepts 5V - 12V and requires ~10W So 5V @ 2A = 10W Or 12V @ 1A = 12W
Oli
Probably slightly more nuanced than that due to regulator dropout voltages etc. To ensure a full 5 volts on the USB ports (and make sure USB peripherals behave well consistently) you'd probably need an extra 1 to 1.5V (I'd need to work out what regulator is used and look at the data sheets to be sure). Also depending on the PSU used, the higher the voltage, the higher amount of energy will be lost due to heat as the voltage is stepped down. So, 7.5 volt @ 2 amps or 9 volt @ 1.7 amps are probably the best out of the options you suggested - high enough to be properly regulated to 5V yet not so high as to waste energy as heat. If I could be bothered (and I can't) I'd hook a MKV up to a bench power supply and see how how much current is pulled at different voltages - it would also be interesting to see the temperature of things on the PCB with a thermal imaging camera. fringes
"Power supplies" vs. "chargers"... Is there a difference? Does something called a "charger" (<12V) have adequate regulation to power the pineapple?
Oli
Power Supply / charger terms are often used interchangeably. There will be an on-board regulator (or more likely 2 for the different rails) on the Pineapple PCB so everything is fine so long as you use something that outputs a reliable voltage / current in the range supported by the relevant regulators. The bench power supply (which is totally overkill for powering a pineapple where a cheap wall wart is fine) can provide a really stable lab quality output. You can then use this to set an exact voltage and see just how much current is pulled. This can be used to characterize the Pineapples behavior and determine optimum voltages and see how, for example, adding an external wifi adapter changes the current / power requirements.
